Post-Nasal Drip...HELP!!

Good lord...I've been dealing with this for the last twenty-four hours! I'm just getting over a cold, and now my sinuses won't stop dripping into the back of my throat. My voice is hoarse from all the nagging coughing, and I'm just about ready to shove a new year's firework down my throat to make it stop. I've tried NyQuil Cough and Sudafed Nasal Decongestant, but it hasn't done me a whole lot of good. Even my nasal lavage only helps for about half an hour, and that does nothing for my sleep. If anyone has any ideas or tips on how to make this stop, please let me know!

BTW, Happy New Year! Hope everyone is doing better than me...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

When I get any kind of serious sinus action, it's almost always a precursor to me getting sick. Hope you don't get sick.

Well, usually that's what happens to me too. I'll get a head cold, and then it'll drip into my lungs and that usually resluts in an infection. I've been spitting up most of it, but I'm so exhausted that all I can think about is going to bed. But I can't even do that because I keep hacking! Ugh...thanks for the well-wishes, though...

I really don't have any advice for you except to prop yourself up when you try to sleep and maybe that will work. If you're like me, by tomorrow or so this will get a lot better--although that doesn't help you deal with it today<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0">
One thing that caught my eye is that you take over the counter stuff. I guess I'm from the 'old school' and was told to never take any over the counter stuff except for expectorants. I'm curious if others were told the same or if doctors have relaxed on CFers taking decongestants, cough syrup, etc?
Lilith, (or anyone else) does your doctor say it's OK to do over the counter stuff? That would have saved me a whole lot of needless runny noses over the years to know that it was OK to take decongestants.

I wish I could give you a magic cure. Those drips are the pits & as good at keeping sleep away as anything I know. I just drink, drink, drink. It doesnt really do much except hydrate me & then make me pee. Tea with honey has helped coat my throat, but it doesnt make the drip go away. Outside of prescription nasal sprays I dont know what to tell you. Until you get a resolution, be careful it doesnt affect your lungs. Keep a close eye on things & I hope 2006 finds you feeling better!

I've always taken over the counter stuff for colds and things like that. Never had a big problem. I don't call my doc for simple colds and the like, but I'm assuming that it's fine. Sometimes when I have a lung infection, my doc will actually tell me to take Sudafed on top of the perscriptions for some relief. It works great when I'm congested, but for the drippy stuff it doesn't really help <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0"> Anyway, as far as I'm concerned, it's fine to take over the counter meds. My usual remedy for allergies is Benadryl, so next time you have a runny nose, try that. It does make you sleepy, though...

Hi...I have been suffering from the same thing. I just recently got over my cold....or so I thought, the post nasal drip won't go away...which in turn I cough, wake up coughing or can't sleep cause I'm coughing. I tried the stuff you have tried to with NO luck....BUT I did find one that DID work. Try DRIXORAL (I think that's the spelling), I tried it and it really really worked for me. Good Luck! I have a CF appointment this Thursday, I'm gonna tell them about it and I'll let you know what they say. I'm 37 yrs old (female) with CF

I take over the counter medicines all of the time...(for colds that is) and it is alot cheaper too. My family doctor and CF doctor have no problems with me doing so either.

DRIXORAL, huh? Great! I'll look for it! Luckily today the drip is pretty much over with, but you never know when it'll strike again. It's over the counter, right, or do I need a perscription? Either way, thanks a ton!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Our doctor has always been very strict about over the counter meds as well. The only thing we've been allowed to use over the years is plain Sudafed or plain Robitussin. He told us that the plain Sudafed & Robitussin (without the antihistamines) would be all that he would allow for over the counter cold remedies. When my daughter was having an especially difficult time with post-nasal drip (before sinus surgery) her doctor had her inhaling albuterol (same stuff she was using in her mini-nebs - just up the nose instead of through the mouth) and this gave her alot of relief.

Hi....You will find the DRIXORAL right along with the other cough meds.
