Pouch bellies

I don't know if this is really correct, but I always associated that huge pooch belly with malnourishment. I know that malnourishment can cause your stomach to sweel up like that - i.e. the hungry Ethiopian kids they show in those commercials -I guess I just left it at that because we have issues with malabsorption and possible malnourishment at times.

Just me thoughts on the issue - I have never asked a doc about it though. The inflammed bowels thing makes sense to me as well.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I have always had that problem and I would always suck my tummy in but since Ive gained like 20pds its much harder to suck in the tummy, so I get lazy and not which in turn can be embarrassing in public in public depending on what type of clothes I wear I try to suck my tummy in if I fail sometimes hubby will point it out. At home I could care less Ill stick it out as if Im pregnant, hubby cant say much about my belly cause he has one too!

Yes I agree. This reminded me of my little sister in law-my hubby's lil sis. Up until she was 7, she had a huge belly. She was a slim kid, but I mean her belly was huge-she looked like one of those malnournished african children. They finally got an answer from a doctor and he said that she lacked enough hydrocloric acid in her tummy and wasn't digesting enough as a result, and he called it an ethopian-like syndrome. She seemed healthy, but was actually malnourished.
So I think Lindsey you hit the nail on the head. There's too many of us cfers with the same complaint for it to be an issue. I have had this so bad that I truly look 4-5 months pregnant, thats not normal.

If this makes you feel any better, and i am sure it will, ALL of my female friends have a pooch of some sort ( none of them have cf ). Even the thin ones. I read somewhere about how it is normal and healthy to have more fat in the abdomen area for women. I have a small pooch as well, but there are ways to disguise it. Standing up tall, wearing jeans that come up to the middle of the poochy area ( too shortwaisted ones show the whole pooch area, too high ones make it stick out under the belt loop area) but ones that hit the middle almost work to hide it and make it appear smaller. Short of liposuction which most of the stars and models have to maintain the totally flat abs, we must wear them with pride....lol
My one friend joe used to call it " the kangaroo pouch". He told me every woman he was ever with had a "kangaroo pouch". It isnt just a cf thing, Its a woman thing.

I think you and Amy are correct to some extent in regards to some "poochieness" being normal. I myself have a little poochy spot in my lower abdomen - I always have and always will no matter how many crunches I do and I used to do hundreds a day to try and get rid of that area. Though I will say I do not knowa ton of girls/women my age that have the same thing. I have actually met only a very small amount of women that have that like me.

BUT I also think there is a different type of pooch. I have that little kangaroo pouch thing working, but there is a totally different type of pooch I get at times too. My whole stomach sometimes expands to uncomfortable proportions. THAT pooch I think can be and in many cases is related to CF and our not absorbing food properly .. or even gas - I get that way if I have a serious build up of gas at times.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I saw that doctor (Dr. Oz?)who is always on Oprah once talking about it. He said when the body is under stress, your body stores fat on the belly. I believe he said that fat pad on the body is considered an organ, can't remember what it's called but it began with an "O". Anyway, he also said this is the last place the body loses fat. It will use fat everywhere else before it begins using fat from the belly.
