Predinosne raising Blood Sugar

my doctors say i got cfrd because it was inevitable and the prednisone i was on, for 6 months, just enduced it. i think it created it. now im off the prednisone after weening off it over a month, and my blood sugars are still high, and i still technically have cfrd, but its gotten better

when i was on prednisone and diagnosed, i started insulin right away and my blood sugars were high until i got the right dosage. more hten a few times my meter couldnt even register my numbers ("over 600, unmeasurable.")

i would say talk to your doctor, prednisone will play with your sugars, but make sure you have a plan on how long your going to keep him on the steriods. just take precaution is all im saying i guess. but at the same time, prednisone can be a miracle drug- so dont take him off it unless he thinks its a problem. maybe stick with low sugar foods, no candy and soda, while hes on it? keep the free sugars away? wow that was a ramble, hope it makes sense. good luck.

Just like the others said.. Prednisone is the reason I am on oral antidiabetic medication as well as I have insulin coverage....among the many other things that Prednisone does....

Wow thanks for the replys. I am sure the my blood sugar prob does raise everytime I take steriods I am only on them for maybe at the most 3 weeks at a time and that may be 2 times a year. I have never had to watch my blood sugar. I am always on the low side actually. I am usually never above 85 normally on a normal range, before food or anything. I usually stick around 78. So 70 is the cut off for low so I bought a moniter just to watch and make sure that im doing good. When I was on cipro for 3 days it dropped it down to 49. So I am really watching it since I am on Lequavin now, which is known to lower it. So instead of the 20mg today I only took 10mg and it hasnt gone above 100 today so that makes me feel better. But for someone who has never even thuoght about blood sugar that freaked me out at 1 am.

I also have this problem with antibiotics, as well as with
prednisone.  Anytime my body is fighting something by blood
sugars freak out.  You might talk with your doc about this.
When your blood sugars are unstable it hinders how
effectively your body is able to cope with whatever it is fighting
(e.g. what you are taking the meds for).

Yep. This is quite common. This is a condition referred to with different names: "pre-diabetes", "transient diabetes", "steroid induced diabetes". Whenever I'm on prednisone, I am also on insulin and keep close tabs on my blood sugar. This same thing can occur when using TPN. Usually when the doctor decides to d/c the steroid, the blood sugars return to normal. However, there is always the chance that this "pre-diabetes" could open the door to CFRD and the diabetes sticks around even after stopping the prednisone.

Yeah It always upped my blood sugars to near 300..  It also
gave me god awful acid reflux.  I could not take a drink of
pop or orange juice without it burning all the way down.  I
refuse to take it anymore.  I got tired of eating like 30+
tums a day just to keep it down.  I mean I could not even
sleep at night cause it was so bad.  The doc never thought it
was bad enough to prescribe a med to help with the acid reflux.
So In return I told him I won't take it anymore.  Even
when In the hospital they try to give it to me and I just tell them
no and they tell me to take it, I usually just leave it sitting..
After the 5th or 6th day they throw them away and don't give
me anymore, BUT they still show up on the bill...

I'm on prednison too now, after my transplant. My sugarlevels stayed ok so they stopped checking them after a while. But 2 weeks after tx, i had to have a course of high dose pred for acute rejection and they checked my sugarlevels again cause they said it could rise from the pred. Luckely it didn't. The highest it got was 8 early in the morning (that is a bit high, should be that after dinner) But it was just ones and after that it stabilised again.
