Prednisone for ABPA

Hi all,

My doctor is considering (or I suppose giving me the option) of putting me on prednisone (30 mg/daily x 3 wks to start) for borderline ABPA. I have a hx of ABPA (in my teens), and due to a recent decline ( ~15% of my lung function in two yrs) my docs are wondering if ABPA *might* be part of the problem. In the past, when I had issues with ABPA, my IGE's would be in the 1000's-2000's and I was tx'ed with long courses (6 mos+) of steriods. Now, my IGE's hover in the 200-600's, but again, due to the unexplained decline, my doc is wondering if this is an issue.

In past, I had a HORRIBLE time on steriods (of course, it didn't help that I was a teenager). My mood symptoms were off the charts. And while, I know there were other contributing factors (many other contributing factors), while on steriods, I experienced an episode of major depression.

So, I guess I am just looking for some advice from the peanut gallery. I am VERY hesitant to do prednisone without any real empirical proof that this is the problem.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

I see no one's responded to this. I just noticed it.

My oldest, Anna', was treated with prednisone and an antifungal. It was so long ago that I can't recall the amount of prednisone but it was for longer than 3 weeks. It was more like 3 months or so. Sporonox (capsules, I think), that was the antifungal, I couldn't remember. She was on that for a long time as well. The course worked for her, she didn't have any more issues with it until after her transplant 5 yrs later when she cultured Aspergillus but she did not have the allergic aspect to it (different lungs I guess). Because of the transplant they were very aggressive and she was treated with inhaled Amphotericin B and changed from the liquid Sporonox back to V-Fend. That worked great. Can't quite figure out how she grew Aspergillus in the dead of winter in Nebraska, everything was frozen.

Hope this helps.

i too was on prednisone for a couple months maybe 4 or so?? i was started off with 40mg which was sooo much. and on sporonox as well.
they worked amazingly!
i had never taken prednisone before that either.
the only side effects i did have was loss of appetite. peculiar on prednisone...high blood sugars....and slight "moon face" only for a week tho.

i am also on antianxiety/antidepressants as well.
so i didnt have uncontrollable mood swings i believe.
