Garran has been on and off prednisone since he was a baby. But, he did get very irritable and moody on it. He is no longer on any steroids, after over a year on it, he is totally free, and he is a different kid.

Maggie was on prednisone(they had called it a prednisone burst) because she was wheezing, tight and coughing when she had an upper resp infection a couple years ago. I can not remember the dose, it was 2 times a day for 5 days. She was crazy; I remember thinking I needed to call the doc and tell him the prednisone is making her crazy. SHe would cry and tell me she hated me, for no reason. SHe didn't sleep well and never stopped talking. But, the prednisone worked so well, she stopped wheezing, it opened her airways and while she was doing her HTS neb she brought up a lot of mucus and got better soon after that. The craziness went away after she finished her prednisone. I did tell her CF doc at her followup. I said something like next time you order that prednisone you're gonna need to order me something too(like valium<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">)

Prednisone will do that to almost everyone....I would imagine especially in a child. I was on very high doses right after the transplant and it was not fun at all. I had nightmares, I was all emotional, and just felt like I was going crazy. That all happened again and a lot worse when I was on high doses of Solumedrol for rejection.

I know some adults who go nuts with a 10mg dose so I can just imagine what it does for a child. I am now at 5mg a day and I have no problems with it but put that dose in a child who is probably about 4 or 5 times smaller than me and it would probably reek havoc like it is doing with your 4 year old. By the way....I'm 5'9" and weigh about 147 pounds.

Thanks for the replies.Aidan is 56 pounds and just turned 4.There was no way we could keep him on it so we called the doctor. We are skipping the last two doses. At least I know it wasn't just him. He was also thrashing and screaming out in his sleep, beating on us, pulling out his PICC line, beating his younger brother- it was horrible. Now today he is much calmer. Right now he is doing his third hour of IV Vanco while attached to the VEST. Of course he now woke up with a nasty cough...I hope they can still do the sinus surgery on Tuesday??

Megan, mom to Aidan CF and Gavin, no CF
