I was just prescribed 20 mg for five days. (No tapering down the dose) Has anyone else had this experience. I thought it was unsual, but I guess maybe it is normal since it is only for five days. Anyone have any thoughts?

Im on it now...same dose, no tapering, but a lot more days than you. Why are you on it?? My airways are so tight I can't function (but Im not overly congested at all)- so Im on it for 3 weeks. I have been on it before- where they did taper it, so I don't know why not this time...

I've had pleuritic inflammation for a couple months. On and off pain and discomfort on my left side. They treated the infection but the inflammation hasn't gone away. I've tried ibuprofen, but it doesn't help.

That is so weird AMYKINs I just started prednisone today for the very same reason. I am on a tapering dose sttarting with 60 mg a day though. My chest is very tight. I feel as though I am suffocating but no really increase in congestion.

I know that when I had alot of bronchospasms, the docs would put me on prednisone bursts, I would get doses of 40 mg for a period of 5 days. My doc said that if I were on it longer, they would then taper it down...like the one time I was on the stuff for a month, they slowly brought me down. Taking me off without tapering me at those doses would surely have put my adrenals at risk (they wouldn't produce enough steroid on their own) My son has been through similar rituals with the prednisone, 5-7 days of fairly good doses of prednisone and then off when he had his asthmatic exacerbations.

Becca- That is exaclty what Im going through- I blame it on the fact that I had the flu/ horrible cold over a month ago & to the cold weather. I can't even walk without basically gasping. But I don't feel congested @ all, & the nurse who comes to my house to flush my port- I made her listen to me- said I sound pretty clear, so it must just be tight airways- I hate the feeling!!!!! but Im not feeling sick as in having an infection, I just feel sooo short of breath. Do you use any inhalers? does anything help it? I only use combivent- I wonder if there is something else out there that would work too.

I take albuterol nebulized, twice a day, servent inhaler twice a day. I was just at the doc and my PFT'S were really good. I do not know what is going on. I thought I was getting sick because my kids had been but only with ear infections, and roseolla. But It started Friday and nothing by Monday so Icalled and they put on the prednisone. Ikinda like being on it once in awhile because my house get supper duper clean, but Iknow the longer term effects are not goot. Ithink the next time I go to see the doc I am going to ask about pulmicort. Anybody else have any experince with it? Where do you live Amykins? i am from Nebraska.

This must be the winter for this problem! I was hospitalized in early January after the most awful "flu-like" illness I've ever had. About 2 weeks after I was finished with IVs and had tapered off 80 mg of prednisone, I got extremely tight again and my pulse rate was above 100 almost constantly. Walking from one room to another was a major aerobic activity. I was sure my heart was going to give out. Doctor couldn't find any major congestion, and suggested that maybe since this had been such a strange viral episode in the hospital, the problem was inflamation and we had come off the prednisone too soon. So, we started at 40 mg. and he said to stay on it at least a week, drop down to 30, and if I started feeling tight again to just go back up to 40. He said it might take 4-8 weeks for the inflamation to subside. He was right. It has taken a loooooong time, but it is working. I am now down to five mg., and plan to stop it this weekend.

I usually have terrible problems with anxiety every time I reduce the dosage. This time it hasn't been as bad. Maybe there's a virus this year that is causing more inflamation problems than congestion problems for CFers. Anyway, everyone take good care.

Becca- Im from Massachusetts (where its nice and cold).
Debbie- I think I had the same virus as you- it knocked me on my butt & it lasted soo long. I thought for sure I was dying of the flu for 2 days. Same thing though- even walking 10 feet kills me- The pred. is starting to work a little bit- i feel some relief. The only thing I dont like about it though is it makes my blood sugars high. Well I hope your all feeling better soon =)

Debi & Amy.....those were my problems last year. I didnt start with my usual CF congestion etc. My airways were shutting down tho. It was a time from hell. I let myself get to the point that I couldnt breath dep enough to drink a glass of water. My doctor was surprised I could function let alone drive myself into New York City. It took months of prednisone & various other stuff to get me to the point that I felt comfortable. I am still battling my weight & not back to my base line, but that is the norm for me. Give me congestion. I know how to handle that, but the more Asmtha type stuff scared the daylights out of me! It was all caused by a virus also. Not as much flu like except the fevers. No aches/pains, coughing etc!

I have been on 20mg Prednisolon for 10 days twice the last 6 months. No tapering either, i asked about that but i didn't have to. My doc said it was 0,5 mg per kilo. I'm 43 kilo's so 20mg was good for me.
