Probiotics?

I've been on a continuous search on why Zithromax caused my acne, and why it hasn't subsided since I stopped taking it last June. So I've posted at acne.org and this was a very knowledgable response I got: Tunaboat is my name on there.

TUNABOAT: the azithromycin did not affect your liver; what it did do is wipe out the naturally occuring and beneficial, even essential "good bacteria" in your intestinal tract, which you need for proper metabolization, absorption and utilization of nutrients, without which your skin and general health will suffer in every way. doctors do not tell you this but please take my word for it: anyone who ever takes antibiotics, especially for a prolonged course (1 week+), whether for acne or chlamydia or asian flu, must take a probiotic supplement at least once daily. your probiotic intestinal bacteria are almost certainly severely depleted, which means that you are not properly absorbing nutrients, you very likely have a candida overgrowth (run search of candida at http://www.my.webmd.com for explanation), and you have also quite possibly developed a form of "leaky gut syndrome" also known as irritable bowel syndrome, a surefire symptom of which, besides acne, is the presence of many very small barely visible white bumps on your lips near the corners which you can see up close in a mirror.

the most important thing you can do in your particular case, tunabout, and what you NEED to do ASAP, is get this product, the most powerful probiotic on the market, at the cheapest price, here http://www.mercola.com/forms/primal_defense.htm. Get the 180caps bottle at $55USD. As far as your acne is concerned in your very particular case, this will be the most important purchase you have ever made and will be worth every penny (if for whatever reason you cannot buy this, go to your nearest health store and ask for "acidophilus probiotic supplement"). It is the most powerful probiotic ever created for the commercial market and will turn your currently defenseless digestive system, overrun with candida and incapable of properly eliminating toxins and nourishing your body, into a lean, mean acne-fighting machine. My promise. With 180 caps, you should take one with breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, totalling 3 a day, which will last you 60 days. Throughout these 2 months, do not worry too much about not eating this or that: the important things to remember are the following principles: (1) little to no sugar; (2) little to no dairy; (3) many vegetables and fruits; (4) lots of fiber; (5) lots of water BETWEEN meals.
That's it. Go forth and prosper.

What do you guys know about probiotics? I figure Zithromax has something or depleted something Cipro and Minocycline didn't? Thanks in advance.

I am a STRONG believer in Probiotics. There is so much info I could give you. One thing, ever notice after antibiotics or a tune-up how you have "loose bowels" or Oh crap stomach, as I call it, LOL. That is because the antibiotics kill ALL bacteria good and bad. Your stomach needs the good to be balanced. I suffered from horrible stomach aches until I took probiotics and now I never have them. Go to this web site and the one I recommend are Primal Defense OM. They are kinda pricey, but you can get cheap alternatives at any natural health store. Hope this helps.

also if you eat lots of yogurt, that has the good bacteria that is needed in your intestinal tract. I eat lots of yogurt, and i seem to feel pretty good, I take zithro three times a week and i seem to not have so many pimples when i eat yogurt alot as to when i dont eat it...

My son takes probiotics (for like 8 months now) - he uses Culturelle. My research showed that your response from the website is pretty accurate. The antibiotics kill the "good" bacteria and causes problems. My son definitely had "bacterial overgrowth of the bowel" as he took a test for it. My only issue is why he had the overgrowth (he is 4 and not yet had the need for anitbiotic therapy). Regardless of the "why", we use culturelle (1 cap daily although his gi doctor hinted that we could do it 2x a day, only she hesitated because of the expense). We pay about $20 US per box (that lasts us 1 month at 1 capsule per day). Don't plan to stop using it anytime soon.

I bet you see some improvement if you give the probiotics a try.
Good luck!

Another interesting fact that I learned during my research: The bacterial overgrowth causes difficulty in the absorbtion of carbohydrates (something CFers should actually be able to absorb without enzymes). The symptoms of bacterial overgrowth resemble those of lactose intolerance (which is probably why website response told you to limit dairy while restoring your intestinal flora). We actually swore our son had lactose intolerance ON TOP of having CF. It was that test for lactose intolerance that picked up the bacterial overgrowth.
So just out of curiousity. Do you seem to be having more trouble than usual digesting dairy?

The only thing is that with my son: After they discovered the bacterial overgrowth they did 2 things. 1- they gave him a special antibiotic called Flagyl to kill the bacteria in his intestine (about 1 week) and 2 - started him on the probiotic (at the same time as the Flagyl) to restore the good bacteria in his intestines. If taking the probiotic doesn't help your problem, you may want to talk to your doctor about taking this special antibiotic (or one like it) along with the probiotic.

Good luck!

Yeah, I have been thinking a lot lately that I may be lactose intolerant. I even asked my primary care doctor how you know if you are, and he says cut out dairy for 2 weeks and see if you feel better. I'd go hungry if I did that so I just continued eating dairy. I have an appointment with my CF doctor June 6th so thats enough for the probiotics to take affect and if its still bothering me I will ask him about it. Thanks for the info
