Pulmo and HS

Ok so I started the Hypertonic Saline last night and it was great! Wahoooo....cant wait to see how well I do on it.

My question is I do two puffs of albuterol like 15 minutes before the HS (i dont have a prescription for nebbed alb...and my doc said the puffer would prob work fine). I also do Pulmo, but should I do the pulmo before the HS or should I spread the times out? I know with some meds, like the aztreonam that I am on...they told me that stuff should be staying down in the lungs to work on the mucus that was stuck there. So therefore they wouldnt want me to do HS right after that, b/c in essence I would be coughing up the aztreonam. In addition I do both the HS and the pulmo once per day. Should the times be spread out...like one in the AM and one in the PM? Or could I do them back to back...and which one would come first if I were to to do it that way?

Thanks guys!!!

Hi Caitlin,

I take the Albuterol neb solution, HS, and Pulmozyme twice a day.

I do the Albuterol solution, then the HS, then the vest, then the Pulmozyme. I don't do anything at the same time. Also, I don't take breaks or wait 10-15 minutes between any of them. I'm not saying that's right but that's what I do. Each doctor advises differently. I'm not on Aztreonam and have PA and MRSA like you do. I hope I helped at least a little.

Thanks!!!! I think the reason he told me to wait was b/c the alb is the puffer not the neb.

Yeah, Caitlin. I think you're right about that. The puffer isn't quite as effective and takes longer to kick in. Why are you on the puffer, though, vs the nebulizer? Why? I use the inhaler if I need to, but my doc would NEVER advise me to use the puffer over the neb for treatments!!!

I dont know really. I'm not normally on alb, but he thought it would be helpful with the saline. I have had problems with alb before...I dont like the way it has affectd me, but that was a long time ago. I would be willing to try again...so I may call on Monday...b/c I think I need a new puffer anyway. When you do the alb neb...do you do the whole dose? He did tell me that I could do the neb for a smaller amount of time b/c my body doesnt like the whole dose. I dont know how effective that would be tho.

Hi Caitlin,

Yes, I do the whole dose of Albuterol each time I do the neb. It does make me shakey and raise my heartrate, but after about 30 minutes it goes away. To me, the inhaler does nothing. I couldn't even tell you the last time I used it. It may even be expired...really. When I exercise, I don't even use it. I have had to replace others before b/c they expired. For me, the neb does miracles. Maybe you should try it again with half the dose.

I use the Inhailer albu, just one puff b/c it gives me headaches and panic attacks at two puffs. My doctor said albuterol is a part of the saline routine because they used it in trials and it gets a little deeper in your lungs. He told me I didn't even have to take it, but that it made it work better. He never mentioned an albuterol neb -- I hate them anyway. I would ask your doc if it's necessary. I wouldn't want to spend time on -another- neb if you don't have to. Two is enough *laughs* I wouldn't want three, especially if I didn't have to. It's up to you, but my doc says the puffer is fine. Just my two cents. I love the saline though. Never will give it up.
