Pulmonary Rehab Programs in New York State

I am seeking your assistance. My doctor really would like me to participate in a Pulmonary Rehab Program to get me jump started on exercise. The problem is that I cant find anything on the internet that is "somewhat" close to me. I realize that I live in the "boonies" & am willing to travel a bit, but the bigger hospitals that are not in NYC dont have anything online to indicate they have the programs. I thought I would send it this way to see what any fellow CFers from NY might know. I think it might be a fruiteless attempt, but I wont know unless I try! THanks in advance~!

I'm not in New York, but in my state the Pulmonary Rehab and Cardiac Rehab are done in the same facility, so if you don't find something on-line about Pulmonary Rehab, you might want to check for Cardiac. Highly recommend it, so hope you can locate a program near you.

Its basically an exercise program under medical supervision. If O2 is need etc. They observe, recommend, adjust blah blah blah. The goal is to get you into a regular exercise without the need of medical supervision.

If you cannot find a program that is suited to your needs maybe you can get a physical therapist or a respiratory therapist to come to your home and monitor you while you are exercising. I would buy a treadmill if I were you and also get a saturation monitor. You can do it really yourself. You need to stay above Ninty percent sat while exercising. If you fall below that you need oxygen during your workouts.

Melissa,

Here's an idea if you don't find a rehab center that's convenient. Your respiratory therapist should be able to run you around hallways and stairways and measure your O2 sats all the while. Maybe you've already done this. Basically they need to determine what they want your heartrate to beat / min when you exercise and then get your rate up to that point. Oxygen suggestions will be made. Then that respiratory therapist or even one more close to your home can accompany you to your first few visits to Curves http://www.curves.com/ which are all over the place. You'll get on a program that you, the therapist and curves design to fit you best. They'll have all equipment that's built for small women which is much better than any equip. you'd find at most rehab centers and heck you might even start to have fun with it. Curves is for women only. It won't be like going to a doctor's appt. as much but you'll have to set goals and check in so you'll be able to stick to a routine none the less.

I hope this helps.
