My husband has "non CF bronchiectasis" and is on Pulmozyme. He has only been on it a couple months and was put on a round of prednisone at the same time so I can't say for certain that the pulmozyme helps him.
He is still working on clearing old plugs in his lungs, but as soon as those clear we are hoping the pulmozyme will help keep them clear. His lung function was dropping, and this was basically the last med out there left to try.
As far as how pulomozyme works, I think it works on the DNA of the dead bacteria that combine with the mucus to make it extra thick/sticky. It breaks down the DNA and thins the mucus, so I don't think it matters wether or not you specifically have CF. Maybe just that you have similar bacteria as someone with CF.
But I also remember reading somewhere that they tested pulmozyme on patients with non-CF bronchiectasis and it was not very effective.
If I find that article, I'll post it for you.
