Pulse Ox Readings

At my son's clinic appointment this week his pulse ox never got above 95. My son has never had a pulse ox reading below 99. Should I be concerned? What is considered in the normal pulse ox range? What can cause a lower pulse ox reading? The pulse ox was one of the first things they did when we got there and then a couple of other weird things happened and I forgot to ask the doctor about it. I had one of those moments last night where I woke up in the middle of the night and suddenly remembered about the pulse ox number - I must have been dreaming about the clinic appointment or something!!! Now I'm paranoid that maybe it signifies something. But again, why wouldn't the doctor have mentioned it if it was any big deal?

The readings vary from person to person even those without CF so you had to go by just what is "normal" for your son.

Many things can affect it. Heat, exhaustion, inflammation, something on the fingers, low battereries on the unit.

I wouldnt worry unless it happens continuously &/or he is showing signs of something going on.

Remember like everything else it is just a tool to keep an eye on things. Not a sole deciding factor & it will vary just like many other things do.

HUGS to calm down!

With my boys we know that Josh is 100% at his best. Jesse is usually 97, so when numbers are lower we ask questions.

Look for them moving their fingers, slouching and not breathing normally and a good fit on the finger clip. We've even asked to use a different finger or a new clip with better results.

There are lots of factors- if it was that low, the doc would have been concerned

When I was a teen my lung function was getting pretty much on the crappy side but my O2 was still at 100%. When I started getting really sick in 2004, that's when it started dropping down into the low 90's. Most CF docs will tell you that as long as O2 stays above 90%, it's good.
