Question about Zithromax

I just started taking Zithromax and I've never been on it before. I was wondering how good this antibiotic is, how well if worked, and how long if should take before it started working? Just wondering, if it doesn't started working for me soon I will have to go into the hospital for IV next week , and that will suck !

Zithromax, in CF patients, is not taken for antibiotics properties (to kill bacteria).

It's taken for anti-inflammatory properties.

So if you feel like your lung infection is getting worse, you should contact your doctor, because zithromax will do nothing to treat pseudamonus and it will do an extremely poor job in killing staph aureus.

I hope that helps.

I would add that while it is not a thing where I "felt" any different that I could put my finger on...my incedences of exacerabation (sp?) have lessend on it. So what ever that is worth...........

I've been on Zithromax for almost 2.5 years. It was not given to defeat bacteria, but for anti-inflammatory purposes. A side benefit of the anti-inflammatory is that I end up having fewer infections. I've definitely felt healthier since being on it. I agree with Amy that it's not likely to do much for a current infection. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your help, I feel kind of stupid now thinking it was an antibiotic, thank you for letting me know exactly what I was taking. I was wondering why I was feeling like it was getting worse than better. So the Doctor told me that if I wasn't feeling better on it in a couple of day that I would have to go into the hospital, looks like I will be going in next week for some IV treatment . Thanks for your help again.

Karla,

You aren't stupid and are absolutely correct, Zithromax is an antibiotic. Zithromax just happens to have other good properties. Of course we all have different bugs but Zithromax isn't the drug of choice for killing the "usual" CF bugs. So... we use it because it decreases inflammation.

FYI...I have been on Zithromax three times a week for 3 or four years now and had an intial increase on my FEV1 of 5% after 3 months of my starting to use.

Same here with the Zithro

I've been on it for a year-to treat inflammation only. I've noticed improvement on it-of course not in infection stuff though.

I was on Zithromax for quite awhile and did not notice any decreased exacerbations and I did notice CHRONIC yeast infections and really bad ringing in my ears. Stopped Zithro and no more yeast infections and my tinnitus is much better. I have meneires disease so that could be why I have ringing in the ears, but it use to be soooooo bad that I needed a sound machine to sleep and since stopping the Zithro it is soooooo much better. But, mainly I could not deal with Yeast infections every month!
