Question for the Ladies

Hi girls =)

So i started IV's on thursday night and am now out of the hospital YAY =0 Anyway I always seem to get yeast infections when I am on the IV meds (like i sure many of you do too). I usually have my doc give me a buch of diflucan to stock up in case they come up and i ushually get one or two during my two week treatment. I was wondering if anyone knows if you can take difulcan to often? Also how long do you have to wait to take one? (Like take one at the first thought of it or wait until it has gotten to the point where you are positive you have one?) Or if anyone has any tips on things i could be doing while on the IV's to possibly prevent these infections from even happening, because even though the diflucan ushuall kills it in a day you still have to go though getting one and then waiting for it to go away..boo=(

Thanks a buch, and any suggestions would be great !

Happy Sunday!

Eat yogurt. Try to keep the refined sweets to a minimum and eat more protein. Stress is not good of course and try and get your rest. Sugars and wheat bread yeast besides taking antibiotics.

Hi Melissa!
Grrr. I can't stand the yeasties.....hate those buggers. I would start off with getting on a good probiotic. For some reason the cf foundation does not stress the importance of probiotics.....many other lung illnesses do, but for soem reason they have not grabbed on to that yet. Because cfers are on sooo many abs, the good flora is constantly obliterated. That sucks for so many reasons.....you should be on a probiotic ALL the time. New studies are showing not only do they help the inflammation in the gut, but they help inflamation in the lungs as well.
Google probiotics, cf, inflammation...that should bring up some of the newer studies..also, go to pubmed and do the same.

diflucan is a great drug, but you can take too much of it....like most things, candida can develop a resistance to anti-fungals. If you feel like you are really getting one, then taking a diflucan is great....but, if you are not sure, don't jsut take it, just in case. Try eating PLAIN yogart with fruit and stevia...the sugary yogart will not help as the high sugar content only helps feed the yeast....plus, sugar suppresses the immune sytem and contributes to inflammation. I find that when i have asthma, if I eat plain yogart it soothes constriction....interesting.

I had to be on vfend for 2 months for systemic yeast and I learned a lot about how yeast grows in the body and some of the ways it manifests itself. One thing that helps my thrush (when i get it which is seldom now) is oregano oil. I use a few drops on my tongue twice a day and in a few days it is gone.

When I suffered from systemic yeast, I was very sick and really thought I was dying. My cf docs did not think it was a problem so my a friend of mine sent me to an ID doc who treats manily AIDS patients.....I walked in he listened and within minutes, had diagnosed me with systemic yeast. These were some of my symptoms..

wheezing, achiness, terrible pain in my vagina, swollen glands, pain in joints, low grade fever, repeated sinus infections, thrush, tinnitus, and the worst was a dry hacky cough.

my cf docs just assumed my cf was causing this, they were wrong.
After 3 weeks on the anti-fungal, I felt better than I had in 3 years. Every one if those symptoms was gone.

All that to say, (sorry this is so long) get on a good probiotic. Take it three times a day and double the dose when you are on IVs...it will really help.

ok, that's all.
mandy

PS one weird thing hat has happened since I began probiotics, my sputum is soooo much saltier...and that happened way before I started HS.

Hope you feel better.

I had an intern talk with me after my first transplant. I asked her, I am so concerned with all the yeast infections a transplant patient can get. She said she heard in school that taking yogurt up your Coulow is good. How in the world I thought??? How yucky is that? lol

When you are a transplant patient taking Diflucan is not good because there are interactions with your drugs. So basically I watch what I eat and walk around in the nude. Just kidding but sleeping naked if you can helps. Walking around wearing a long skirt and nobody will know.

To prevent future yeast problems there are several things you can do.
They have wicking away fabrics now and I am searching for the best underwear. I think victoria secret ipex line is good but not sure if that is the best.

change your under garments a few times per day and use a blow dryer on your coulow after you shower. It is good on your feet as you can get yeast growing there too.

I agree with Mandy taking a good probiotic. Jarrow is a good company.

when you get rid of yeast in you coulow (vagina) you will be breathing better and your stomach might improve as well. when you fix one organ the others fall into balance too.

Fighting yeast is common for all of us on drugs so watching what you eat always is important.

No I did not see the oprah show but did she use that word coulow? I think leuleu is one too. My mother called it a pundee when I was little. I hated that word. She would say did you wash your pundee often when I would take a bath.

I recently asked her where she came up with that word and she said it was passed along from generations lol

My ex husband coined the phrase "is Matilda arriving in the red cadilac" when you are having your period. He was from South Africa and he said they used that there. How funny is that?

Holy cow!!!!! Matilda arriving in the red cadillac is great...Ill have to tell my husband that one.

actually, she did not use coulow...but here are some of the names I remember.
This are from the studio audience on the regular show....NU-NU, Lavender...what in the world?, Vajay-jay, tutu....there were many more, but those are sticking in my mind.

I have taken diflucan before for yeast infection and it works pretty well. I wouldn't let it get to bad - normally as soon as I feel one coming on I fill a prescription and start taking it.
I also wanted to add that I use Summers Eve feminine wash everyday and I think it helps greatly. I used to get yeast infections EVERYtime I was one any antibiotic be it simply an oral or IVs if I was only taking one or if I was taking many at a time. I have been using the Summers Eve for a little over a year now and have only had a yeast infection towards the end of my last 2 hospitalizations when I was on several heavy duty IV meds.

Okay, not to sound like a total moron, but what are the symptoms exactly of a yeast infection? I only ask because I've seen tons of threads about this, and I'm finding it a little odd that I've never gotten one before, for as often as I'm on antibiotics. Seeing how many of you have gotten these makes me think something's wrong with me, or maybe I've had one and just...didn't know it? (sounds pretty impossible, though) Maybe my 'coulow' is inhuman or something...

So you want to know what a yeast infection is like in your coulow? I am sure you never want to really know but I will tell that it is great that you never had an itch or a burn or painful probing (if you know what I mean) Then you are one of the few ladies who is truly blessed. I also hear it can look like cottage cheese.

If you keep your Coulow in good shape you can survive the storm. Wear loose fitting clothing, when you are home try to be bare down there and stay away from junk food.

Seriously there are books on what not to eat if you have a serious condition. Some people can develop chronic fatigue from yeast and people who have immune disorders like diabetes, transplant patients and the whole gamut like CF folks are more susceptible.

As I said you can keep yourself in check if you take good care of yourself.

Ouch...nope, never had anything like that. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I will keep those tips in mind though, so I can continue to avoid it!

as all said-yogurt, take probiotics, like acidophilus and panothenic acid. drink more water and avoid yeast like bread.
as far as avoiding them in the 1st place-don't know. I get one every stinkin time and can't avoid it! Too many antibiotics! It goes to show you how toxic these meds are-yeah we need em-blah blah blah.

My doc told me to take one diflucan and then wait 24 hours and then take another. I find this fights my yeast infection and then i don't get them nearly as often.

Also, I had a yeast infection without even knowing it and my gyno said that it is best to do something about it whenever I go on IVs or any heavy antibiotic because I might not know I have it and that yogurt won't always prevent it

hi, all.
You can use PLAIN yogurt in a douche, but I have used the applicator that comes with contraceptive foam or diaphragm jelly to put yogurt directly into the vagina. If you have an active yeast infection the coolness can be soothing.
