Question for those who use Hypertonic Saline

I just started HS (3%) and it really does not make me cough much while I am inhaling it. Just a little dry, non-productive cough.

It also makes me feel a little tight. Several hours later I loosen up and begin to get stuff up. I have the same experience with Pulmozyme.

Is this normal or do others cough up stuff immediately while inhaling it?

Thanks!

I had the same problem with tightness a while back. My doctor had me start out doing the saline with the alb puffer beforehand and thet did ***** for me, so I started using the neb albuterol and it worked for a while. Then my doc all of a sudden was like that takes too much time for you, so he gave me a dropper of albuterol and I mixed it in with the saline...well that also did ***** for me. So I started doing Pulmo again (which I had stopped b/c I had the saline)...now I do albuterol, pulmo, then saline and I feel really good during and after.

I do 7% and have never had a problem. Once in a while I dont cough stuff up but I take that as a good sign.

Like Jennifer says it could be that a higher % could help you better..
But if you're saying that 3% makes you feel a little tight, please don't try such a high dose at ones. As HS could have severe side effects.. I had to try it in the hospital where they gave me a higher dose every time over a couple of days and they monitored me closely cause they were afraid of bad reactions. I went to 6%, that helped me well and I didn't have reactions. It helped right away, not hours after.

I would ask your doctor if you could try a higher dose, don't do it on your own if you are already experiencing reactions like feeling tight...

Good luck!
