Question PICC line/Vest Therapy

Hey,

Yeah I get it too with my PICC-its more of an uncomfortableness than anything else, but I wish I could say something that has helped me! Just wanted to say you're not the only one, and I don't thing you're doing anything to hurt it.

If you got it inserted only a few days ago, then its probably understandable-they had to tear through your muscle to get to a deep vein, then dig and prod to get the line in and up, and push a metal wire up your arm-now you're essentially vibrating a bad muscle tear. (the iv surgeon explained this all to me once, and it made perfect sense when I thought about it that way, but gory)

From what i understand, as long as there is no warming of that area-which can mean infection, but I'm sure you know all that, a little uncomfortablenss is ok.

But sucks!

Lindsey,
After getting picc lines for the past 8 plus years, I just had a
port put in last August and would recommend it. I have a
sponge that I put over the port and needle when I do the vest.
My port is located on the right side of my chest and it has
made IV's at home much easier-no longer do I have to be admitted to
get a picc line in and then worry that it is going to go septic. If
you have any questions please feel free to pm me.
Glad to hear your Home :)

I don't have much to add except I hope you're feeling better soon. My daughter had a PICC line last year. I don't remember her feeling uncomfortable with the VEST on but then again she was 2 1/2. If you like having manual CPT, could someone come to your home (like home resp therapist) and do it for you? Just a thought.

TAke care,
rebecca(mom to Sammy 8 no CF and Maggie 3 1/2 with CF)

Hi Lindsey,

I just had my picc out yesterday and was experiencing the same thing. My picc nurse said my picc was in a superficial vein so I may experience some pain. Heat helped a lot because it dilates the vein so the picc won't rub as much.

I got the pain a lot when using my vest. I bean filled heating pad. I heated it up and put it on my shoulder under my vest. I think it did two things. First, it heated up the vein and second it created a barrier between my vest and my picc so I didn't have the pressure and rubbing on my vein.

I hope this helps.
