First of all, I have to say that you're 18 and shouldn't be drinking! But, since you do, alcohol can have certain effects on the medications that you take. It can get in the way of how you absorb them, therefore, even though you are taking the dose that your doctor prescirbes, it may end up not being the right dose because of the alcohol.

Also, CFers are known to have liver disease, and of course, if you do end up with liver disease, the alcohol will make it that much worse and you could end up needing a liver one day along with lungs.

Yes, I had a double lung and liver transplant, but I don't drink, so it wasn't anything to do with alcohol. I seriously don't even like the taste of alcohol so I have maybe one or two drinks a year, if at all.

Anyway, if one day you need a liver transplant because of CF, there may be a chance that you will not get a liver (or even lungs for that matter) if you have an alcohol problem. Plain and simple, when you are of legal age, you can drink occasionally, but it's not good for a CFer (or anyone) to drink the way that you are describing.

I would definetly say that if you are going to drink, do it only occasionally. A very good friend of mine that has CF just went thru an evaluation for lung transplant and he was denied because of his drinking history. My brother who also has CF, has a pretty bad drinking problem. It started when he was probably about 15 or 16. He started out just drinking at parties and with friends, but now he gets drunk nearly every single day and his health has gone down hill pretty fast. He also has CFRD, so the alcohol is bad on his blood sugar. I used to like to drink and have fun with my friends when I was your age, but now every time I drink, the next day I feel horrible and it's much harder to cough the junk out of my lungs. In fact alcohol dehydrates you.
