<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Some people genuinely want to know more about it, but have misinformation about it, or have confused it with some other condition. I have learned to give different people different details about CF depending on how well I know them, how much I think they can handle, or how genuine they seem about wanting to know more.</end quote></div>

Thats exactly how I am in relation to educating people. I think about what I think is the most important or what the person has the most misinformation about and I tell them the truth. Depending on how well I know the person or how long I think they will be in my life, I tell them what I want them to know (obv truthful info).

I get frustrated at times too for ppl who dont know much about CF, but like lightnlife said, if you want people to be more educated, help them. You may not be able to change thier opinions, but at least they would know the truth.

I ran into a former coworker a couple weeks ago who was raving at how big DS has gotten and asked a question on the lines of "so other than that initial bout, he hasn't had any problems has he?" And we get our fair share of the he'll outgrow it, doesn't look sick, etc. etc. comments. Just gets tiresome at times, but we do still try to use it as an opportunity to educate.

DH from time to time has said to people, who seem to question DS's diagnosis -- "Would you like to see the genetic test results from the Mayo Clinic?" That usually stops them in their tracks. DH is pretty mild mannered, but the sarcasm will come out when he gets the snotty "he doesn't look sick" responses.

My comment usually is " yes, he looks healthy now, but it is a progressive disease - so he will unfortunetly get worse as he gets older. But for now we are going to enjoy the healthy years!" And we'll pray he stays healthy for a long time!! :)

I'm with you, Liza...

It's tough being sick but not looking sick. I spent all of high school looking fine but feeling terrible. It was not only irritating for someone to question the validity of my illness, it was hurtful and frusterating.

Even now, a lot of people in the healthcare industry always say, "You don't LOOK like you have CF," or assume by the way I look that I am very healthy and say, "Well atleast you have a very mild for of the disease." I heard this from just about every RT that walked into my room during my last hospitalization. (I am pretty chunky which might have something to do with it!)

I guess depending on my mood I'll take opportunities from people who don't know what CF is to educate them but more or less I just shrug it off unless the person is someone important to me.
