Rectal Prolapse Issues

Hi, I'm new to this forum but have been dealing with cf for 2 1/2 years. My daughter was diagnosed at seven days old. So far she has been pretty healthy . This past nov. she had her first incidence of rectal prolapse. On the worst days it was 2-4 times a day and now it comes and goes, sometimes not happening for a week or up to twice a day. It is tough because we can't leave her with a babysitter ( even for a quick date) and she is otherwise a spunky , healthy, sweet girl. At our cf center they have discouraged surgery saying she will outgrow it by four. Does anyone have any experience with this as a chronic condition or with surgery? Any opinions?

I'm probably no help. That is how our daughter was diagnosed at age 3. She had three incedents in a two month period. After the second the ER doc a pediatrician recommended gently pushing it back in. She had a third then was diagnosed. She never had another one. She's 17 now. Sorry, no help really

That is also how my son was diagnosed - rectal prolapse. He was going 3-4 times a day and it was abnormal. He was 3 years old when he was finally diagnosed (don't get me started on my pediatrician who kept insisting he was fine with these abnormal stools).ANYWAY - the prolapses stopped as soon as he started taking enzymes. He has only had 1 prolapse since (5 months after starting enzymes) - but he was very constipated and I think he was taking too many enzymes.Your daughter is having prolapses, but are her stools normal (at least somewhat)? Maybe her enzyme dosage is not accurate yet.... she is on enzymes???Maybe all those prolapses have weakened her intestines and the surgery will be necessary. I hope not - the problem SHOULD be corrected through the enzymes.Good Luck!

I have the same answer as another poster. Emily had several instances of prolapse and outgrew it (So I think I may not be too much help) She was diagnosed with CF at two days of age after surgery for meconium ileus. She had her first prolapse at the age of three and her last at the age of about 4. She is now alnmost 21. She outgrew them I guess. Once they are potty-trained, they learn how not to "push too hard" I think.

This is also how my daughter was diagnosed. Once starting her enzymes she continued to have a couple prolapses and her Dr. told me after having several prolapses her muscles need time to strengthen back up to prevent the prolapse from happening. Maybe since your daughter has had so many she needs a little bit more time to stop them completely. This was true with my daughter.....we've gone a little over a month without one. Another tip we found that worked with my daughter is to not let her sit on the potty for a long period of time. We would go with her and distract her from sitting too long(reading a book or making up a story worked). We found the longer she sat and strained the more likely she was to have a prolapse. I hope this helps <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">I know how upsetting the prolapses can be so hang in there and hopefully it will get better soon.

It sure did seem to make my son hurt when he had his prolapses. He has had between 7-10, mostly right before and after he was diagnosed. He screamed and hollered and cried. I was completely sick to my stomach. Maybe it was just uncomfortable and it scared him... I couldn't tell you. But I do think it was painful. But yeah, you're right. It does help to not make a big deal out of it. You can't fix the prolapse unless your child is somewhat relaxed. If she is having that many prolapses, you should consider changing her enzyme dosage (ask your doctor first). Perhaps she is taking too many or too little. Thanks!Jena
