Red blood, brown blood,

How long after a major bleed do you continue to cough up old blood left over in the lungs? I thought Andrew had gotten rid of everything that was left over, but he just coughed up a few huff coughs of blood. Not super red blood, not brown blood, but kind of barn red colored blood. Is this three weeks old?, or should I consider this new blood? I ask because our doctor told us to call right away if there is any more sight of blood, but I don't want to call and go through the doc on call this evening if "barn red blood" can still be left over from three weeks ago. I'll just wait till morning.

Thanks!
Tonya

I'm no blood genius, but I don't think any blood that's still some shade of red is three weeks old. Three whole weeks, to me, would have to be brown. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, please.

To me barn red is more of a red than brown and a sign of new blood. It would be fresher than three weeks ago.
Just to be on the safe side I would contact the Dr anyways. If you explain how it looks then they will make a judgment then.
It could be from a couple of days ago but I would guess its not from three weeks ago.
Hope that helps.

Thanks to both of you. I called the nurse this morning and they are going to call back today. I wish I knew what is causing this. He's been on vitamin K, so I really don't think that is the problem. Anyway, thanks for the help. I had no idea how long it usually takes to clear the lungs after a bleed.
