Thanks for all these responses guys! I appreciate the input. I do drink soda and coffee, but like I said my diet hasnt changed since Friday. Its not like I am drinking more or less of anything. Do you think that maybe the abx were causing the reflux? Like could that possibly be like an affer effect? Its never happened before. I am going to see if it goes away today...if not I may have to do something..we will see!

Thanks again!

Reflux can make you miserable. Mine flares up when I am on certain antibiotics, such as Zosyn (awful on my stomache, I burn clear up to the back of my throat) as well as Doxycyline. I am classified as severe by uper endoscopy, actually considered a Nissen until my lungs went to hell. I take Nexium for the reflux and try to avoid foods or drinks that make it worse. Just bending over makes me reflux! Sleep with your head elevated too. I hope this helps, Jenn

Hey Caitlin,

I just wanted to offer this to you. I get horrible reflux when I take Zyvox orally. I am actually on it right now (for a 2.5 week course) and I have been having some issues too. I was in chat the other night and a few people told me to try baking soda and water and drink that. I did mix about 1/2 a teaspoon in some warm water (make sure the baking soda dissolves all the way) and I drank about half the mixture. It did help relieve some of the reflux though it didn't make it go away completely (I couldn't drink the whole mixture - the warm water did a number on my stomach).

I hope that the reflux starts to get better - normally for me I get really bad reflux when I am on abx - mainly Zyvox - and when I am off them I go back to normal within a few days.

So it is totally and completely something that can be caused by meds. I have never really had any reflux issues unless I am on meds. I now take protonix for reflux though. Also reflux can be a result of our constant coughing. Our constant coughing can make us more prone to it because of the constant air pressure from our stomachs (when we cough) hitting the flap that closes over our esophagus (sorry for the "not so medical" term lol). It weakens the flap making it to where it doesn't close as "tightly" and thus reflux is more of a problem.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I used to suffer really badly from heartburn a few years ago. I am now on 40mg of omerprazole a day since transplant to prevent it.

I can't really help you on what helps it, but I would seriously advise you to NOT let it go on without telling your team/centre. People with CF I have heard, are 'secret aspirators' (sp?) meaning that they can aspirate into their lungs in their sleep, and cause damage.

There is a greater risk after transplant for this, but the risk is still there before hand. Sleeping propped up can help, and of course getting treated for your heartbrun/reflux too!

Thanks for all your help! I thought it was getting better today, I didnt have any reflux till like 4...and then I started to get a lil bit. Still not as much as yesterday, but enough to know that its still there. I also woke up this AM with a horrible stomach ache....like that hunger ache, but it hurt sooo bad, so I am thinking that may have been some acidity...by the time i actually got out of bed though I was feeling fine. I dunno...I am going to try and cut down on the soda and coffee see if that helps (i have always drank, drunk, hmmm that stuff, so I dont know if its that), but I will at least try and see if it helps, maybe try some Tums if it comes back.

Thats a very interesting remedy, Lindsey, with baking soda. I havent been home all day, so I couldnt really try it today, but maybe tomorrow if I still have symptoms. Blahhhh....ohhh the life!
