RT's refusing to do CPT

<div>I stayed in the hospital for a tune up a few months ago and had requested that I get manual CPTs done instead of the Vest (because I just don't feel like the vest works like manual does) </div><div>When I asked, my doctor just kind of laughed- apparently the RT's at the hospital I stayed at refuse to do manual CPT (some claim they were never trained) because they don't want to get carpal tunnel. I was floored. There I was staying in a CF wing and I couldn't get ANY of the RT's to do manual CPTs! Seriously?! Has anyone else EVER run into this problem?  </div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div><br></div>

Small world - I've stayed in the hospital twice since I've been old enough to take care of myself. Once was when I was 18. I stayed in Children's Dallas for 2 weeks. This past time I was 21 so they made me go to UT Southwestern because I was too old to stay at Children's.
I was quite upset. I go to school in NYC and have a CF clinic here- and I just call up and come in for a 20 minute manual CPT session whenever I want. I was so irritated when I found out I couldn't get it done at home too.

All the times I had to stay in the hospital pre-trans I was NEVER denied manual CPT! In fact, my RT's preferred manuel CPT to the vest!
I would file a fromal complaint with the hospital administration.
If that fails, find a different hospital I guess.
Best of luck to you.

I wish I would have posted this back when I was in the hospital and really upset! I just thought of it today and tried to do some research on it but nothing came up so I decided to post here. I would have definitely done something more and expressed my concerns (I was too busy telling the head nurse that I didn't appreciate when the day nurse would ask me if I had "gone poopoo" or repeatedly told me that I looked to healthy to be in the hospital...needless to say, I did not have a good hospital stay at my first Big Kid hospital)
I will definitely demand manual next time I stay there. I feel like sometimes us CFers are allowed to be demanding when it comes to our health and I find it absolutely ridiculous that the RT's are too worried about hand pains to do their job. Meanwhile...we're the one's staying in the hospital for weeks at a time.
*I'm being a drama queen and I'm not ashamed!*

Actually it happened to DS two years ago after he underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction. He was supposed to have vest/nebs every 4 hours and for obvious reasons wasn't too thrilled about vesting and didn't like to vest back then when he was sleeping or sleepy. So I asked an RT if she could do CPT instead and she said she didn't know how. So DH and I would do it during those times. We also did the vest and nebs while they would drop off the nebs, listen to his lungs -- think the bill for RT services was a couple thousand dollars for a 3 week stay.

I am shocked to read this. I have never ever heard of this. My docs would never even considering offering me a vest-the reason I'm in the hospital is for good manual cpt!!<br>If I was given this response, I'd refuse to be admitted and do ivs at home. I'd get better rest, better food and can do my own vest.<br>This is a joke of a cf center, no offense.<br>
