Saline Solution Concentration

I'm sort of new to the nebulizer scene. I've only been doing Tobi so far. I went to get a refill and the pharmacist gave me a 0.9% saline solution to mix with my Tobi. Actually, my husband picked up the prescription for me so he didn't think to ask what it was for! At first I thought it was hypertonic saline but then I got thinking and I vaguely remember someone saying that hypertonic saline is around 7%. Is that right? If so, what is the 0.9% solution for? Ie - what does it do in our lungs?

Adrienne - 24/f/CF

PS - I live in Canada if that makes a difference. I know sometimes we do things a bit different up in this neck of the woods.

Hi,

You should have two prescriptions. What you do is mix 3ml's of the 0.9% saline solution with 6ml's of the 10% saline solution. They are done together in their own nebulizer. You only use a total of 4ml's of the 7% solution at a time. It breaks up the mucus in your chest. For me, it does wonders. It works better than the Albuterol, Vest, and Pulmozyme combined. Tobi is done with a different neb.

I do:

Albuterol
Saline
Vest
Pulmozyme

*Sorry, I'm not on TOBI. I think TOBI is done at the very end. I'm not too sure, though. Ask your doc. Maybe your husband only grabbed the one prescription and left the other at the pharmacy. Good luck!

Hi Relat,

Yes, the 0.9% solution would work; however, it's only 0.9%. That's close to nothing. I understand that you don't have access to the 10% solution but has your brother's doctor considered maybe a 3 or 4% solution. Some people on this forum use that dose instead of the 0.9% and 10% because they tolerate it better. You may have a better chance of finding one of those solutions. Then instead of buying the 0.9% each month you could buy the 4%. That would be a stronger dose. It would help more. Ask your brother's doctor. It will probably cost more but help more too.

As far as the eflow, I don't use it and have no suggestions regarding it. Honestly, I don't even know what it is. I've heard it mentioned on this forum but never really paid attention.
