Self Employed and Insurance?

Hi, my husband is hoping to become self employed this year. I am a SAHM so our insurance is through his current employer. He has been exploring insurance possibilities but it looks like our daughter would either be denied or the cost would be VERY high. So far, I believe Anthem is the only company he has been told would deny her. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this?

Thanks!

I'm self employed, with CF, and use GHPP:<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.dhs.ca.gov/pcfh/cms/ghpp/

It's a state funded insurance for people with CF in California. No regular insurance provider will cover self employed folks with CF. Not that I've found anyways. The only way is through a group plan which is only offered through employers.

I've tried asking what it would cost me with a regular insurance provider, and they wouldn't even let the conversation get that far. They just said, "No sweety, we can't cover you. Good luck."

Unfortunately, I don't have any nice answers for you unless you lived in CA. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">
If you find a secret to it all, please do tell!

I just realized that it's your daughter you're talking about, not you or your husband wcf. I don't have experience with that scenario, but I'm not sure the answer will be too different. I'll be interested to see what others say.

When my dad became self employed I couldn't get insured so my mom had to get a job just for the insurance. I later went on state insurance but I could only be on that for a little bit (18 months I think) before I started working myself.

Good luck!

Growing up my parents were contracted mail carriers (mom still is) which means they were not actual postal employees so they didnt have the health coverage and other benefits. They obtained BLue Cross on their own (before I was born thankfully) and paid a fairly high rate for those days, but they did it. Granted I am speaking about 30 years ago. How about some type of HMO? Although the cost would be less you have the worries of more restrictions with the care. Just a thought!

My husband is self employed. Before we made this step we thoroughly checked out insurance. There basically is not a private insurance policy in Texas that would carry her. Luckily Texas like many other states have a health insurance plan for the "uninsurable". It is called the Texas Health Risk Pool. It is through Blue Cross Blue Shield and is better than the group plan we had at my husband's previous job. I think we pay $200 a month with a $2000 deductible. Not bad when you consider the alternative.
