sense of smell/taste

Have any of you noticed a loss of smell or taste that goes along w/CF? I haven't really been able to smell for a few years now & now I don't think food tastes as good as it used to. Just wondering if anyone else experiences the same thing

I've smelt toast for years. Now I barely notice it, but at first it drove me nuts -- literally woke me up, like someone was cooking breakfast. Doc said it was medicine-related. Either that, or I actually had toast up my nose. But the smell never went away, despite my being off all the meds I was on when it started. It remains a mystery. Still, if you have to smell something, I suppose you could do a lot worse than toast.

My ENT doctor has told me that when you have chronic sinus problems, the nerve area in your nose that controls sense of smell is affected-- hence the severe loss of sense of smell.

I don't know if everyone suffering from loss of smell also suffers from chronic sinusitis, but I am sure that my loss of smell is because of my sinus problems.

im 15, and have definitly noticed not being able to smell taste- as good as i use to be able to. But i have also had 5 (going on 6) surgeries for nasal polyps. directly after those surgeries, NOTHING tasted the same, but either i got some of my taste back, or i got used to it, b/c things stopped tasting bad after about a week. I hope this helps, b/c im not sure if you've had problems with nasal polyps or not

I've had 7/8 sinus surg. to remove, scrape nasal polyps. I have lost nearly all my sense of smell, the only things I smell are coffee perking, or my nose has to be right over the pot of food cooking.

On the other hand; in referance to the Muco-myst thread, you don't taste terrible meds.

Mine is a bit of the opposite, it seems that I have a "super sniffer". Maybe it is the 20 some odd sugeries that I have had on my sinus' that mutated my sense. I smell stuff that others can't, specifically odors. I am really bad about evaluating peoples houses by their smell. Maybe I could use this to the power of good, who knows?

I believe I have. I can smell very potent substances like coffee, nasty garbage, or something. But, as far as fly by your nose type smells, I can't really. I have polyps every once in a while. I try to remember to shoot up that spray up my nose, but I think if it really bothered me I would remember more often.
