hello,

yesterday and into the early evening, my O2 sats started dropping like crazy and it became extremely difficult to breathe comfortably. i slept about 1 hour when i finally fell asleep this morning at 10 am after feeling tight and itching all night (the insomnia may have more to do with the prednisone though.)

i was recently put on prednisone (weds.) for severe wheezing after 2 weeks of "getting better" iv abx and a third week of "getting worse" abx. i'm on a good dose (high for me actually) and was also instructed to continue the cipro 750 2X per day. yesterday was my 15th day of cipro. i have been taken off ceftaz and amakacin since the doc was thinking the extreme wheezing and worsening symptoms could have been a reaction to being on ceftaz for 3 weeks and the terrible tinnitus i've had was a reaction to the amakacin. good greif.

now i'm starting to wonder if it isn't the cipro causing problems and am wondering how i'd know? i'm going to stop taking it right away (as it says to do on cipro info pages online if SOB or tightness in chest occur) and will call my doc monday.

my question is whether it is more urgent than that? i mean, do i need to go to the ER? i'm still having difficulty breathing to a point. i'm also very itchy but no rash. i'm wheezing a little bit, but mostly my chest just feels very tight even when i wear my O2 (which i NEVER have had to wear during the day until this past 3rd week of meds... hmmm...) i'm coughing a LOT less than when i was put on abx though.

i guess i wonder what more a germy place like the ER would do for me that i can't do at home at this point? if i stop cipro and continue prednisone and O2 as needed as well as bumping up xopenex, i don't know the ER can do much more for me. right? any thoughts?

i just think its really strange i'm soooo much worse as far as breathing difficulty after 3 weeks on abx. my FEV1 was worse the third week too, but he expected that cause i sounded so awful.

does this sound like a drug reaction to you? what else could it be? i also was under the impression that prednisone helps TREAT allergies and reactions like this, is that incorrect?

thanks, guys. i'm just really scared....

First of all, does your CF doc have an answering service? If so, I'd start there. Secondly, if my reaction seemed severe enough that I'd stop an antibiotic, possibly causing resistance, I'd go to the ER if I couldn't reach my CF doc. They might need you to take Benadryl or something for the allergic reaction. Besides, maybe you've encountered something else that you are allergic to. I hope that things start getting better for you. It is very scary when you can't breathe.

It could be the Prednisone. Although it has been used to treat allergies in some it can cause itching in some & the SOB could be from high sugars.

The first thing I thought with your breathing was how I feel with high sugars & no nebs help. Only when my sugars go down (I use insulin tho) that I feel the relief.

Have you checked your sugars during the worst times?
