seriously annoying, female issue

So last spring I had an abnormal pap smear, first of all it took my doctors office 7 MONTHS to call me about it. So they refer to me another doc in the same office for the follow up, well it turns out that my regular doc didn't order the additional tests she should have on the original sample like she should have, so they had to redo the pap and order the other tests too. The doc was concerned that with my immune system not being normal because of the cf that I should have a colposcopy which is just another test to get a better look at the cerical cells, it just involves some type of solution that they put on your cervix and then they shine this certain type of light on it. If it shows up a certain color you have cancerous or precancerous cells growing. Ok, thats fine. So I make the appointment. I go in, have this done, and while I'm there up in the sturrups she says, ok now I'm going to take a biopsie!!! What??? No one said anything about that! Next thing I know there's this horrible pinching feeling as she litterally cuts off a little piece of my cervix!!!!! Then she says, ok now I'm going to get a sample of the cells from the lining of the uterus, you might feel some cramping. Now, imagine your worst menstrul cramps and times that by 10. I'm not kidding!!! Finally she's done and says I can sit up. Then she procedes to tell me that the results of the second pap were normal....meaning I more than likely just had this procedure for NO REASON!!!! I could have choked her right there!

Oh my gosh this just makes me SOOOOO MAD!!!!!!! I hate unecessary procedures! I had an abnormal pap not long ago and they were recommending all the delightful things you mentioned and I am a big wuss and they told me to make an apt for the procedure- which i did-, but I also called my CF Dr. and told him what they said and he was like oh that's no big deal and so I said "NO BIG DEAL"!!! " YOU ARE SUCH A MAN!!!! It's a big deal, abnormal anything is a big deal and coming from your chick Dr. is a SUPER BIG DEAL", and then he told me no it's not a big deal becasue a lot of CF girls have abnormal cells there because of this and that and mucus membrane etc., and it's probably nothing. So I said, well if it's nothing why would I do the procedure? He said, "well if it makes you feel better to know for sure" Uh hello, I'm pretty comfortable that it's nothing, let's just observe and if nothing changes we'll consider it cool, gosh like I don't have enough REAL stuff to worry about, and do I look like a science project for EVERYONE with a scalpel? How do we get the word out this is not a NECESSARY procedure, unless YOU want to know, you don't have to do this!!!! Sheesh, I'm so sorry you were unecessarily lured into this, and hello, nice time for them to tell you they were going to do a biopsy, I would have stood firmly behind you, had you resorted to physical violence.

The colposcopy was fine! I didn't feel a thing, so if it would make you feel better at least do that part. But they do not need to do a biopsie unless the colposcopy is abnormal as well. As angry as I am about the whole thing I'm glad that you saw this post since you are in a similar situation! I just wanted it for peace of mind but I was grossly uninformed by my doctors office! At least now you know what questions to ask. Regardless of the results I will never go back to that office again.

In addition to the personal, physical & physcological discomfort there is another thing to consider. Many insurance companies will deny certain testing as routine & only cover them if there is confirmation of irregulartity in other ways. Fortunately this is slowly changing to preventative maintenance instead of corrective procedures, but there still is a long way to go!

I'm sitting here with my legs crossed just reading this.
I always love when I go to the gyno and I tell them I have a thicker lining (of everything) so I feel like they bring in a shovel and take a scoop out of me. I said thicker lining, not a day at the beach!
I'm cringing.
So sorry you had to go thru that!

OMG!!! I know!!!! I went for the same stupid fricken thing with the whole abnormal pap test thing. My Dr. said it is nothing to worry about cuz CF'rs usually have abnormal pap tests. GREAT than why am I being put through hell. So yah They suprised me with the whole biopsy thing tooo. I could have kicked her in the fricken face CLAMP!!!! RIPP!!!!! yah thanks lady!! errrr! Than just this January right after the new year I had another appointment and this time I was prepared I took a percocet ( I dont advise this) but take some kind of pain killer before going. Also you can use the excuse that you might be pregnant so you dont have to go through with the biopsy but that is just bad advise. I chickened out at the last minute and used that excuse so they didnt do any biopsy. I didnt feel like being a ginny pig that day. Next time I'll suck it up and maybe kick her in the face after it is over with. I just wanted you to know that your not alone Im going throught that same damn thing. Apparently if they do the colposcopy 3 times with out the biopsy than you dont have to do them anymore.
Sincerely,
Amanda/24/w CF

Wow, I didn't realize how many of us went through this! Kind of comforting even though it sucks at the same time. Well, no more of that for me unless I have more than 1 abnormal pap in a row. I didn't realize CF women got abnormal ones pretty commonly. I love finding this stuff out after the fact.

Yeah I find it really interesting as well and never in a million years would have connected it..... Also.. Does that mean getting pregnant is harder for us..? I was with a guy for 8 years without being pregnant..never used any protection ever.. after I left him.. he had a girl pregnant pretty soon after.... I also have endometrosis and have had major uterine surgery to get rid of large fibroids.... Do you guys have any of this as well??? I never could figure out I know that I was able to get pregnant once but it didn't work out I lost the baby...... but I couldn't ever get pregnant again..... in all those years could this be CF related????? seems like CF effects every part of your body.. I was wondering esp about the fibroids and the actually gettting pregnany thing...

I didnt use birth control for 12 years. Most of that time being with my first husband. He had children from a previous marriage so I know it wasnt all him. I was only with my new husband for 10 months when I conceived. How much of it was me? I dont know. The big difference is that my new hubby & I had sex 24/7 or close to it (LOL) which of course increased my chances tho I wasnt trying to get pregnant. My overall health was about the same, but my stress level was down!

I had 4 colposcopys w 2 biopsies last year. Because of one abnormal pap. Colposcopy kept coming back abnormal but it was differnt because they couldn't tell the area that was abnormal. They had to check different areas for biopsies because they kept sying cervical cancer. They still cant figure it out I went to 1 speicalist and a cancer speicalist. I had to get one every 3 months. Now I'm supposed to have another I think in april. 6month checkup. To see if they can figure out where the abnormalty is. When I had the first one is was terrible. The 2nd one was nothing. The third one I almost passed out. The 4th one was a breeze. So it is interesting to find out others have the same issue. But 4... I had to have colposcopy after the birth of my first child and have had a couple of paps come back saying inflamation. I go on thursday to have a d&c done and an ablation. Hopefully this will help solve the problems I am having.
