shaky and sweaty

Hey guys I've got a question and I'm wondering if any of you have had this before. Three times in the past few days I get this feeling where I'm weak (especially in the knees), a little sweaty, shakey and I crave something to drink or sugary to eat....So I'll make a PB+J or down some soda and I'm fine. I've been feeling tired lately and I'll be going in for a tune up when I get home from Florida but I just want to know if anyone else has had this happen before??
Any help would be appreciated. I go to clinic tomorrow so I'll se what they say too!.
Peace love and rock n roll,
emily

That has happened to me for most of my life. It's not every day, it's not even once a week. But it happens plenty often enough for my taste. I have no idea what it is, except that I guess it's some kind of blood sugar imbalance. Too high, too low, who knows. In essence, I have no answers for you, but just wanted to let you know I've experienced it for at least 10 years... probably more. My family and I used to call it "feeling floppy." Heh.

That's a sign of low bloodsugar. I used to get that often. I was tested for diabetes and I have it so now I am on insulin. I hardly ever have lows anymore just when I give myself too much insulin.. Let your doc know and I bet they will have you take a glucose tolerance test.

I have that too, and often. I was tested for diabetes but I didn't have it. So now I watch what I eat (enough sugar) and I usually have a candy bar some place close so I don't have to feel like I'm going to pass out. Because when I do get like that I feel horrible and then I'm starving, so I eat fast and then that is not pleasant either. So make sure you are getting enough sugar during the day and keep something close for the emergencies.
Good luck,

That shaky really tired thing happens to me too. It hits me especially if I have been doing more physical activity or have been in a stressful situation. The worst times for me are during the morning before lunch about 10 to 1030 then again at about 2 or so. I just try to snack every couple of hours to try to ward that feeling off. Some times that helps and sometimes it does not. It makes me mad cause then I dont feel like i am in control of my own body when it does that. I have been tested and I am not diabetic at this point. I find that if I eat more food with substance like meats and cheeses..(.since I found out that drinking or not drinking milk does not do anything differant to me...) that i tend to get that shaky and that starving feeling less often or when it does hit it is less intense.

Hi,
I get the shaky, sweaty feeling too, and was told it is low blood sugar. I don't have CFRD. My docs tell me to eat more protein to avoid the drops in blood sugar (such as cheese and meat- also, nuts are a great protein that are easy to carry with you) Hope this helps! You certainly are not alone.

Yeah that's one thing I never understood. I have had that problem all my life, and always figured it was low blood sugar (still do)... but the once or twice they've tested for CFRD, it was negative. Anyone know how or why that's possible?

I get that too. I also had a blood glucose test done and it was fine. The only thing I can figure out is when I was tested I didnt have a spell or it only tests for diabetes. I have been told I have hypoglycimia, which is the opposite of diabetes, you get low blood sugar instead of high, and the insulin is still there but not enough or not enough sugar for it...not quite sure. What I do when I feel this way, sometimes I feel as if i might pass out (also get moody). I make sure I carry hard candy in my purse. This is a quick fix. Once it starts working I make sure I get something "real" to eat, like a sandwhich, something with substance. Snickers are good because they have that sugar but also nuts in it that will last longer. Anyway hard candy is easy to carry around and will help that shaky feeling go away till you can get something. Thats the only advice I can give. Its what my doctors told me to do aswell. But they stress getting something of substance, like nuts, a sandwhich, peanut butter when I can so it can stay in my body longer.

I just wish my tests would have shown something so I know excatly more what to do, at least would have been able to get a sugar tester so I can monitor it during the day.

Hi Emily,

did they test the "long time sugar"? Maybe you should test your blood sugar for some time on your own, before and after you eat something, about one hour later and of course also, when you start to feel bad.

Uli, I have no idea what specifically they tested. I just know they did a diabetes test. I wouldn't know how to test my own blood sugar, I've never had diabetes, so I don't have any of that testing equipment.

And Amanda, I do the same thing. I keep hard candy and such in my purse (if I remember), and if I get stuck in that position, I have a few of those until I can get to real food. It does the trick.

Thank goodness, I am not alone. I have found what triggers it for me is when I eat cereal in the morning that has too much sugar. But then I find the only way to counter act it is to eat more sugar - actually what works the best is peanut butter and milk, maybe because of the protein. I find it happens when I am on IV's or actually feeling fairly well. But when it hits, watch out, the mood goes ka-put. My dad says the same thing happens to him.

What did they do to test you? The glucose tolerance test? That's what I did they sit you there for like 6 hours give you this nasty tasting drink and test your blood every half hour. It was annoying and then I found out I failed so then it was time to start insulin. But it's not bad I do carb counting where I add up all the carbs of what I am going to eat and adjust my insulin so I can eat anything like I sued to so that's a plus!

I am not sure but I don't think so. To really find out they make you do the glucose tolerance test. So then they can see what your sugars are doing throughout those hours after you drink the sugar drink. You should tell your doc about the glucose tolerance test see what he/she says.

That could've been a different test. I know they tested for diabetes at one point, because I wondered if I had it, and they told me it was negative. I just don't remember how specifically they did it.

If you are negative for CFRD it could be hypoglycemia (sp???). That's what it is with me. It can also cause big ups and downs in blood sugar. You can usually control it by eating frequent small meals that include a complex carb and protein, like a sanwhich on wheat bread. Complex carbs break down slower so you feel full longer and your blood sugar stays steady. If you get the shakes eat something sweet or drink some juice but don't rely on sweets to maintain your sugar because you'll crash and just start the cycle all over again.

Ok so I told my doctor about this stuff today and I have to have a fasting blood test. He said to eat more protein in the morning for breakfast...one of my nurses said that will help but not with my long lasting sugars. My doctor said it sounds like the opposite of what diabetes does but he still wants to check everything out. I'm going to Florida for a week and then it's time for a tune up so I'll let you all know how the test goes.
I fogot who said something about the cereal in the morning then craving more sugar, but that is the exact case I told my doc about today. That happened to me on Monday and I had to make a pb+j with milk..
Rock N roll and stay healthy

Nicole,
I have CFRD too, do you use the pump or do you have the pen neddles? I am just using the needles but I have to take usually 5 a day for everytime I eat. I asked my doc about the pump but he says he doesn't know if it would be better for me or not. It's been 4 yrs since I've had it and it seems that I need more insulin now than i did in the beginning, do have feel the same way?

I do have these shaky, sweaty, moody, disoriented feelings & that usually means that my blood sugar levels are at a fairly low level. Juice or half a can of regular pop is good to bring it up, then follow up w/ a wholesome snack.
Someone mentioned candy bars, that will work, however it takes our bodies longer to break down chocolate, so it will take longer for you to feel normal with chocolate than it would with juice, a bowl of sugared cereal (as mentioned before) or something sugary.
I'm not sure if you could rent a glucometer to test your sugars when you are feeling this way?
If this ever happens while you're at a doctors office or while in the hospital, possibly they would have a glucometer handy to do a blood sugar check with and they could let you know your level and if it's too low, etc. Just something to think about.
