Sharp pains

Just curious, I get a lot of neck pains these days. Feels like the trapezius muscle thats always has a sharp pain when it flares up. Anyone out there ever get this type of thing. Feels sharp but doesn't spread. I'm sure it's nothing major I was just wondering if other cf's got what feels like nerve related pains now and then or you sometimes feel it takes very little pull a muscle or injure it.<img src="">

I have pain if I don't keep up with a monthly chiropractic adjustment that puts everything back in line from all the destructive coughing I do. Also, deep tissue massage has been helpful in breaking down muscle development in the wrong place and build ups of rubbage in my system. Pain should never be ignored.

I do not have nerve related pain or feel I pull a muscle easily. I work out and work to fix any problem areas before it spreads.

Deep coughing, now that I'm familiar with. Maybe a trip to a chiro wouldn't be a bad idea. Got an appointment tomorrow so w'ell see what happens.

Due to coughing our roboyd muscles are way over developed. This can cause problems all over the upper back and even in the shoulder - rotator cuff.

Try to arrive a bit early to the appt. if this is your first time so that you can relax and leave the stresses of life at the door. You don't want to be uptight during an adjustment. Bad idea. Have you been adjusted before. It's great. I hope you are going to someone that is recommended to you.

I used to get this all the time and it felt like it lasted forever.

I ended up going to Physical Therapy for it on top of some other things. They gave me body positioning exercises to try that worked wonders.

I will try to explain one of the ones they gave me for my neck.
Lay flat on your back with a pillow under your head, and if it is more comforable your feet flat on the floor with your knees up/bent.
Place your right hand above your head - laying on the ground palm up.
(Your arm should be resting beside your head (not in the air) and be bent at the elbow)
Then tilt your head in the direction of your arm (i.e. your right hand above your head tilt your head to the right slightly)
When you tilt your head you should not feel pain - if you do feel pain try tilting it a little less.
Also you should be in a position that is relaxing because you are laying down you shouldn't have to strain to stay in that position.
If all of that made sense and you are in that position and are comfortable just relax and lay there for at least 2 minutes.
Then slowly move your head and then your arm.
You can repeat the same thing with your left arm as well.
This exercise if done right really helps - It is supposed to shorten the muscle and basically relax away the pain ... or as the therapist told me it "fatigues" the pain.

I am sorry if that made no sense at all. I tried to break it down so it wasn't too confusing. If it is something that bothers you though I would ask your doc if they could write a script for you to go to Physical Therapy. They have to write the script to say something like P.T. for neck, back (upper body) muscle spasms caused by Cystic Fibrosis and related symptoms. Something along those lines. A therapist will definitely be able to help you out with that. It is amazing how simple it is to fix too.

Make sure you use your diaphram for breathing and not your upper body, ie shoulders and neck. Practice "belly breathing"

Ry got sore muscles from coughing, and had CFRA, and a massage every other week really helped. I know most people can't afford every other week (He was a spoiled brat), but maybe try a massage.

Edited to add: Ry's rheumatologist prescribed a 6 week course of professional massage to bring Ry down to a baseline of less flareups, with less pain, and that ws covered by insurance, but they wouldn't pay for the upkeep. We just decided to pay for it when it helped so much. So maybe you can get a doctor to prescribe a short course?

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've got the feeling lugging around a camera bag for 6 years played a part in it. I photographed some tiffany windows in an old church over the summer. It took about 3 hours and I felt like I had been hit by a cement truck. It still flares up now & then. The doc I'm seeing tomorrow is my normal one but a chiro' is probably next on my list.....<i>if all goes well tomorrow</i>.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif" border="0">
