Single and not working

I was just wondering if there are any people who are single and not working. I am a teacher and although i love it I know that I only have a couple of years left doing it. I am basically sick for the whole school year and it is getting worse and worse.

I know that you can get money from the state (SSI/SSDI, I never remember) but it is not very much from what I gather. I have a lot of researching to do but that is a different point.

What I don't understand is how everyone affords their treatment. I can't imaging the insurance I would go on would cover everything. I had home IVs last year and owed $5000. My parents pay now but I am concerned what to do when they are not around anymore.

How do single people do it?

Hopefully, Julie may come across this, unless you can, or already had pm'd her about ssi/ssdi. Through her experiences, she's found out a lot, so maybe it can help you at least estimize what kind of aid you would expect to receive.

As for me, I started out with little income, and even though I didn't have to spend a lot on treatments, I still had expensive meds for enzymes and antibiotics, as well as doctor visits to attend. One thing I was able to do was apply for state aid, but because this is a long time ago, and probably a different State from yours, your situation may be different.
Though, even when I made just enough money for myself, I had to put enough money away, and kinda cut down on other expenses in order to make my pre-payments for meds...the insurance company I carried would reimburse me later, but often times I couldn't wait because I was already out of meds.

I bareley made it myself, I think. How I was able to do better while being married and living in a different country, I cannot explain, other than I went a long time without spending money on meds for a long time!!

Hope you find your answer,

Oh I know that once it gets closer I would have to talk to Julie about more specifics. I am just worried that there is no way to pay for things. Is their aid out there?

The folks who know the most about living independently with any disablity (including CF) are the folks at the Independent Living Centers (see http://www.ilusa.com/links/ilcenters.htm ).

I'd suggest giving the one that is nearest to you (or the one in the closest city) a call and talking to folks there about your options.

Good luck,
