Sinus Infection

I second the Neil Med sinus rinse system...it is the best we've used and you mix the saline each time so you do worry about the bacteria/cleanliness. Just used it last night on Benny (he is getting the nasty 2 year old molars).

Here is a link if anyone needs it $12.99 at Walgreens...<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.walgreens.com/search/search_results.jsp?_dyncharset=ASCII&term=Neil+Med">http://www.walgreens.com/searc...et=ASCII&term=Neil+Med</a>

This is awesome. I've written down a bunch of new things to try. I didn't expect so many suggestions. This is great. I don't feel my sinuses taking over yet - they're on thin ice. So I'm going to take my list of stuff to the market and see what I find. Thanks! I hope it all goes away.

I am excited b/c I'm going to try the Neil Med sinus rinse for the first time. I should be using something like this frequently anyways, so I'm happy to have discovered this. My questions are, on the packaging it says to boil water in order to make it sterile but it warns about not getting it too hot or else it will melt the bottle. Of course if it's that hot it will hurt too! How long do you wait for it to cool? Does anyone sterilize the water for a saline rinse this way? Or do you buy sterilized water in bottles?

If you boil water, let it cool for an hour or so...how long does the water remain sterile for?

Hi!!
I am so glad you are going to try it!!! That stuff is a life saver. I used to just use distilled water, but was told that was a no-no by my cf doc. Soooo, now I boil the distilled water for 10 minutes and let it cool to warm....warmer than room temp for sure. I then transfer the luke-warm water to the bottle. You just want it to be luke-warm when you squirt it up there. Otherwise, it can cause inflammation by burning the tissue...another no-no.

I boil new water every evening...started out as a whip, but it is not really a big deal anymore. I actually use 2 packets per night (two bottle rinses) and do it twice to three times a day if I have a cold. Be very careful while you are sick to sterilize it between each use. I wash it in the dishwasher and then put alcohol in it and then let it air dry. Sounds like a lot, but it is a good practice to keep those viral germs out of your way.

Let us know how it goes

Hi everyone,

I hate to be a party pooper but LouLou when you said to take Vit C, you meant to say 1,000 mg not 10, 000mg right?

I just thought I'd clarify before commenting.

1, 000 mg Vit C per day is already a high dose but taking 10, 000mg is dangerous. I understand that taking a higher dose of Vit C when having a cold is a good idea but overdosing on vitamin C can be really dangerous.

I use the home made version of the Neil Med Rinse. I knew that there was a store bought but for some reason thought that it was something to had to order and get delivered. So I bought the Kosher salt, and now I have a butt load of it, so I will probably use that up, but I dont mind making it.

You can adjust it to what concentration, but I use two heaping teaspoons of Kosher salt, and two teaspoons of baking soda in a quart of water. It has to be put in a glass jar and can only be kept for a week because there are no preservatives. I like it this way, because I dont have to make it new every day, its ready for me at night or in the morning when I want to use it.

I have always just used *gasp* tap water! I know thats not the best thing to do, so please dont jump down my throat, anyone, but its just how the recipe said to do it. I have thought about other ways, but I havent been using the saline rinse as much as I should, so there really hasnt been a need in the past few months. And I was never having any problems with the tap water. I am going to start boiling my water before making it tho, now that I know exactly how to do it...for ten minutes, let it cool, then put it in my glass jar. I know its better for me and should be doing more for my own health. Speaking of....I should do that now, I need to remake it anyway!

Thanks for posting this topic Cowtown....I appreciate it, its been helping me out too!!!

We don't have a dishwasher, so how else do you recommend cleaning/sterilizing the bottle? I'm thinking: soap and water, then soaking it in something...I don't know what. Any ideas? It's a very soft plastic bottle.

So MCGrad2006, keeping the sterile water in a glass jar for 1 week you think stays sterile enough to continue using all week? Do you warm the water up each time you use it or do you use cold water?

And how different is this NielMed rinse then say the Saline Spray stuff you get after a sinus surgery? I don't remember the exact name, but I used to always get a prescription nasal spray to use. I'm wondering how different that is from this.
