Sinus infedtion vs. post-nasal drip

I was curious how to tell if you have a cough from post-nasal drip vs. a real sinus infection or does it matter? My daughter gets the usual winter colds and it seems once she starts coughing from post-nasal drip she usually doesn't stop til we put her on antibiotics. She keeps getting colds and now she has yet another one, the drippy nose is settling down but she does have a cough during the day from the cold. the stuff draining from her is clear, but it usually is clear and even when she's needed anti in the past . anyway, we're seeing her CF doc in 2 weeks and if she doesn't get better of course I'll call sooner but I hate calling for every cough /cold even though it makes me worry.

Sinus infection the stuff is usually colored -- DS's is usually yellow, sometimes greenish yellow. Thicker stuff and it usually has a smell. Not that I go around smelling his boogies, but my eldest niece (no cf) used to get horrible sinus infections and when she'd sneeze that stuff out -- bleah!

Cough with post nasal drip sound more throaty, as if there's something stuck in the throat. I worry when it's chestier, upper chest -- bronchial.

When DS gets a cold, I usually monitor at rest respirations -- see if he's breathing too fast. Is his chest retracting? Check for fever.... Can't remember the exact # of colds the average toddler gets per year, but when I first heard the number I was shocked... Just something to keep an eye on. I worry, too!

When I have a sinus infection the stuff is just packed into my sinuses for the first couple of days until my antibiotics really kick in. When I try to blow my nose not much happens because its so thick. I find that taking a nice hot shower helps and mint tea is good too. When things finally start moving, it is usually this nasty green slime. On about the day 5 or so of antibiotics then I start to get post nasal drip because it is thinned out so much. I blow my nose all the time at this stage because I don't want to start coughing so much that I lose my voice or it goes into my lungs.

When I get a sinus infection, I get what I like to call "broccoli snot." It's green. Not like normal boogers, yellow-green or brown-green, but BRIGHT FRICKIN GREEN. On top of that, they smell awful. I mean awful. It's really gross. The entire time I've got one, I'm grossed out because they just sit in my nose, so I'm stuck smelling them all the time.

Thanks for the input . I'll just see how things go, as usual. Her boogers don't smell, no broccoli in there. I'm hoping the exposure to all these colds/viruses keep her immune system boosted so when she starts kindergarten she isn't sick all the time.
