Sinus Surgery

Thanks guys for your thoughts.

Amy - to answer your question I think he put me on Nasacort - I haven't picked up the script yet but he thought we would try that again.

Kelly and Em - Thanks a ton for sharing your experiences. The doc told me today that the procedure he would do would involve me being under for about a 1 hr. He said he would probably keep me inpatient for a few days and that he would want to have ome on IV antibiotics for a few days afterwards too. He is wanting to get coordinated with my pulmonologist that way they can keep an eye on me in hospital after the surgery to make sure everything stays okay with my lungs.

I really appreciate hearing the experiences you guys have had. It helps to make me feel better about the prospect of the surgery. I am leaning more towards it right now, but am still weighing everything.

Thanks again,
Lindsey

Hey Lindsey, I had it done when I was 18ish. I got an infection afterwards that landed me in ICU. So I would give it a big thumbs down <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> I will also add that every time I have had to go "under' I lose a few points from my FEV that I'm never able to get back. I don't know what's up with that but I know it's true for me.

i've had 6 sinus surgeries for polyups, and i think half i also had some cleaning out up there. from my experience, i would say, do it! it always helps me alot, and my pfts usually go up atleast a little. you feel so much better too!

if you do have polyups, why not get them out at the same time? kill two birds with one stone!

the recovery is little, im out of school, say if i have the surgery on a friday, i lay low for the weekend, and im out monday, then back tuesday. but im never like bed-ridden or anything.

you can do the surgery as a go home right after thing, but with having CF atleast, my dr' prefers me to stay a night or two. usually he wants me to stay one, and then i decide on the next night. but im a teen and i prolly need more recovery time then you.

afterwords, like as soon as you wake up, you feel so much clearer! its so different! and awesoemt to wake up without your mouth open! haha! hope this helps!

I had the sinus surgery about 6 years ago. I was outpatient and I would prefer this method - to avoid exposure to anything nasty. I did not have polyps and the dr. just cleaned all the junk out. It was really helpful and actually helped with my sense of smell. I was out of work for a week and the first day or so, I slept a lot - mainly due to the painkillers. I had a bit of swelling, but everything was basically back to normal by the end of the first week. I really appreciated the surgery, but it sounds like from little debbie that you should ask about impact to FEV's - that would suck to have them impacted.

One of my older brothers actually had the surgery twice. The second one caused him to have trouble with bleeding afterward. Something to also maybe ask the dr.

On a side note, my dad who is a carrier has had the sinus surgery about 3 times. It is interesting to see that he has symptoms of CF but is only a carrier. Both his brothers had the surgery as well. Interesting.

Best of luck with your decision -

Hey guys thanks for the thoughts and experiences.

Christina and Debbie - That was actually one of my first questions - about the impact on my lung function as it is pretty low at this point anyway. That and if it would cause other problems with intubation and all. The doc told me that there are always more risks with anyone with respiratory issues - just as there are risks with people with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, some people that are overweight, asthmatics and so on. He told me that he has done surgery on many people with respiratory problems with poor lung function and also several that are on oxygen at the time of surgery (and use oxygen in their everyday life).

Christina, Debbie and Kate - Though I would love to be outpatient I do not have a choice in the matter. He would be admitting me and doing the surgery as an in patient. He would put me on IV antibiotics for a few days and have my pulmonologist oversee my care so that we are sure no problems arise with my lungs.

I am 95% sure that I will be having this done come January. I have to talk to my Pulmo about it and get his thoughts. I know I would feel more comfortable getting it done after I have been on IVs a few weeks and - while I am still being treated as I usually feel my best at the end of my IV treatment and the week after. Then I start to get gunked up again. That is the point I am at now I am 2 weeks out from IVs and starting to get a more productive cough again.

I am kind of looking forward to this though because thinking on it - I think it is likely that the reason I get gunky so soon after IVs is because of my sinuses. It will just be interesting to see.

Christina - What kind of bleeding did your brother experience? Hemoptysis? or nasal bleeding? It is interesting that you mentioned it helped with your sense of smell - as I have had pretty much no sense of smell for years - I just contributed it to the polyp that I occasionally get though. It will be interesting to see.

Debbie - What kind of infection did you get? Do they know what caused it?

Kate - I have had a polyp in the past but it comes and goes with the use of nasal sprays. Right now it is not even noticeable to my docs. I have to ask them about it otherwise they don't see it or even recognize it is there.

Hey Lindsey - - My brother's complication was due to the nature of the surgery. I believe they disrupted a major vessel within his nose. About two weeks after surgery, he got a bloody nose while he was at work (he was in his mid 20's at the time). It started bleeding profusely and he actually passed out in the men's bathroom due to sudden blood loss. This had more to do the with surgeon's technique, I believe, and not the particulars of the surgery itself.

I did not have any polyps, but still has loss of my sense of smell. I notice that I have an increase in my lack of smell now since immediately after my surgery. My loss of smell is good and bad at times. Good = can't notice my own gas. Bad = probably let it go a little more often at work than I should and everyone else probably notices! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I was really glad that I had the surgery. It really helpd with my sinus headaches and also my nasal drip into my upper chest over night. I will probably have it again sooner than later. I just had a chest and sinus CT to see how everything was going and to see how blocked I've become. Since my surgery, I also complete a saline sinus lavage twice a day using a large family sized water pik with a special attachment for my nose. Not sure if your ENT will have this attachment, but it helps to remove nast from my nose.

Hope this answers some of your Q's. Good Luck!

LOL -- I always say I am blessed that I can not smell because not olnly do I not smell my gas .. I don't smell anyone elses either. Kurt loves it cause he is able to let 'em rip at any time without my even noticing lol. That will definitely be an adjustment if I am able to smell again. I don't even know what some things are supposed to smell like. It will be very odd.

Thank you for answering the other questions about the bleeding also. I appreciate it. I am leaning towards the surgery for the reasons you mentioned .. the sinus headaches, post nasal drip and stuff dripping into my lungs. I think my polyp would be a non issue right now - cause it seems to have packed its bags and gone on a vacation for the time being.

Thanks again to everyone for sharing your experiences.
