Sinuses

Hi everyone!!
I just have a question. There always seems to be something to be going on with my little one. His nose is always stopped up. THE POOR KID!!! I looked inside his nose with a pen light and the left nostril is all inflammed and you can even tell from the outside of his nose! He has chronic sinusitus and the CF doc is well aware of this. He was tested for all allergies and is allergic to nothing!! I am assuming he just has a crazy amount of mucus in there. I am sure there are others with this problem. What do you use to treat it? He is not on any medicines for his nose. Having that much junk in the upper airway can't be good for the lower airway! Thanks in advance for any advice. Hope you are all doing well!

My daughter has that problem. She uses Neil Med sinus rinse and sprays Astelin in her nose every night.

Is he on Tobi aerosol at all? I just saw an ENT at Cleveland Clinic as part of pre-transplant eval and he suggested using a mask with Tobi instead of a nebulizer, he said he's seen some improvement with patients who have a lot of sinus symptoms. Other than that I live on Tylenol Allergy Sinus in the summer.

Hi Kelly. Welcome to my world with Aidan. At age 1, he was always cranky, runny nose or stuffed up, snoring etc...He had a CT scan and his sinuses were horrific, hardly breathing through his nose at all. He started IVs and had his first surgery 4 weeks later. He is now 5 and just had his 6th major sinus surgery and 5th PICC line. He is in constant pain from his sinuses and we try everything to keep them clear. We do nasal rinses, steroids, sinus nebulizers, abx up the nose...You should have your center do a CT scan. If they are totally blocked up, he may need surgery to get rid of the blockage and clean the mucus. Good luck..

With DS his nose never ran, was always stuffed up and we'd use saline spray (simply saline) and the dreaded bulb syringe and try to suck the stuff out. At one point his doctor did put him on Augmentin for a month to get rid of nasty yellow mucus up his nose due to a sinus infection. Think he was a year or two old. His doctor was concerned about it getting into his lungs.

When DS was about 4, I got him to use a sinus rinse kit and was AMAZED at all the crud that came out of that tiny nose.

He also tends to get stuffier and have more nasal discharge when he's on tobi. His doctor believes it's because tobi can be so harsh and is irritating his nasal membranes.

Thank you all so much! I love coming on here and not feeling so alone. Marty had a CT in February and I am not sure if they did the sinuses. Every clinic visit there is always something going on in that department though so I am surprised they haven't suggested anything. It has been such a crazy road so far and I think stuff like this has been getting pushed aside. I am not sure if it is bothering him or not. The poor kid probably doesn't even know any better. We do the bulb syringe with saline and I also get a ton of junk out.
Mag6125,thank you for your response. Marty does do all of his treatments with a mask. The only think that I think may have helped a little way the hypersal. It made it run a little when he first started using it but it doesn't anymore. I sure do hope your eval went okay!
Megan, I am so sorry you have to go through all this stuff with your son. I guess you are a sinus expert huh? I do hope he is doing well! I actually think he has a nasal polyp but am not sure. Is this something you can see when you look into the nose? The left nostril looks totally different from the right one.
Liza, Thank you so much for your response. Marty's nose doesn't run either. I almost wish it did so the junk would come out! Hope your son is doing well (and you!!).
