sleep during ivs

usually i don't sleep well when i am sick because of all the coughing and i am tired because of my low lung functions which is around 30%
i have been in the hospital for a little over a week. of course you know that one doesn't sleep in the hospital. i got ivs all day and night. i dont sleep well in the hospital. i usually sleep my best at home.
i usually sleep about 15 hours or more during in the first week back from the hospital. i usually catch up towards the end of the home ivs.
i am just wondering how much you sleep in the hospital or during the home ivs.

I guess it depends on how "sick" I am.. I usually sleep more when I feel really bad. Hope you feel better soon ! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> joni

I guess I am fairly lucky... I don't have issues sleeping in the hospital really. I am on home IVs now and I am using a system I have never used before with the CAD pump it takes away having to wake up I don't have to think about anything I know the meds are going in on time every time. It's really nice aside from the fact you don't get unhooked. Could be worse I guess. It's nice for the Zosyn i'm on because it's 4x day. Tobi is 1x a day but that is done through the Intermate system which I also love. The CAD system is nice because you just have one bag for 4 doses... set it and forget it! That being said I sleep 8-10 hours at home.

<span style="color: #3366ff; font-size: small; font-family: tahoma, arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">omgosh, i sooo love the pre-programmed pump and TOBI ball! it does suck not being able to unhook, except that i do between doses only if i need to shower, etc. like you, Incomudrox, my home IV's consist of Zosyn QID and TOBI only once a day. same clinic/doctor, maybe? LOL

I am on home IV's now also...this is my first time NOT starting off in house. And I am exhausted! I would almost prefer to stay in the hospital because then I would be forced to slow down. Since I am at home the whole time, I feel like I should (and do) still work my regular shifts. I hope that this does not do more damage, but I know that I am already feeling better. Like I said I am tired...but I am sleeping from 11 PM to about 6 or 7. Sorry I can't do the math right now...lol...too tired. I should be getting more sleep, but I have tomorrow off and will be relaxing and sleeping in!

I see you are in MD so it's not out of the realm of possibility you could goto UPENN in Philadelphia? Either place (hospital or home) I don't sleep well. While in the hospital, I am woken up frequently and also am in the ICU which is notoriously noisy....not the nurse's fault, it's just that there are alarms for everything and there is a bit more activity in that unit. At home, I lose sleep because I have to infuse my IV's so frequently, Zosyn is a common antibiotic for me and that one is every 6 hours.. I tend to try to coordinate the other IV's so that they are batched together. I have to mix my own meds, I don't have coverage at infusion companies, just for the meds (through part D medicare insurance). I am not complaining, in the past, I had to go into the hospital for every round of antibiotics because Medicare does not cover home IV's. If I didn't find a way around this (through part D ins), then I would have been in the hospital most of this winter. I have been on IV's 3 times since November and am gearing up for another round soon.
MCGrad, it's interesting that you say you don't slow down while home but are forced to in the hospital. I also find this true. At home, I still have to do laundry, go to the store, clean etc.....and I know I don't get enough rest but these things don't get done all by themselves. In the hospital, I am forced to relax even if I am disturbed.....I may just go in for a few days when I am the sickest and then come home to do the rest of my IV's when I am a bit stronger. When you are really ill and running fevers, hanging IV's every 6 hours is just not cool!
