slow-emptying stomach?

Jane

Josh has been unable to eat much since being sick in April. We are trying to think about possible reasons (antibiotics, g-tube feeds, behavior issues). He rarely feels hungry and when he does he says he just can't eat.

His doctor mentioned the possiblity of him having a slow-emptying stomach and she wants to do a study on Thursday when we go up for port pre-op. This makes some sense to me (this is gross sorry) because
sometimes he throws up and whole chunks of the g-tube formula are still in it even hours later.

Has anyone had this kind of thing before? I guess there is no real treatment but there can be adjustments made to diet and some meds (reglan) help a little.

Thanks

i have this. the only thing that can help is reglan. but its not a good medication to be taking all the time. i only take it when i really need it.

I had this problem too and I took reglan for it as well. I think it worked, but the real problem for me was the g-tube was just making me sooo full & I would throw up all the time from it- I had to have a j-tube put in- what a world of difference. I have gained about 15 pounds since May when I got the j-tube put in- because it bi-passes the stomach you dont get that full, sick feeling.

I had this problem too when I had a g-tube. I was never hungry and I always had an overwhelming feeling of being full. I would also usually throw up when I woke up in the morning. My tube feeds usually ended at 2 AM and I would wake up for class around 9, have a coughing attack and end up throwing everything up. A combination of eating smaller meals more frequently and taking reglan helped. So know that you are not alone in this problem It has happened to others.

I also have this problem. I take Kutrase. It is another enzyme that helps with just the breakdown of food. I dont feel the nausea like I did and I dont feel full all the time. Mine was also diagnosed with endoscopy by a gastrologies. I was actually there for my gallbladder. But they found that I still had food in my stomach after 10 hrs of not eating.
