Sounds hoarse

My niece has cf, this will be her first summer with it. We live in Rhode Island and since Sunday it has been really humid and my niece sounds hoarse.
I know people have said they get like this in the summer weather, so what does everyone do when they feel like this? Should she call the doc or just wait for her appointment...she goes once a month to the clinic. I just hope this is what is from and she isn't coming down with something she has been doing really good since she was diagnosed.

It could be allergies. SOmething near you might be irritating her that she doesnt have around home. Keep an eye on it & if her cough increases or she is wheezing, then she needs to be seen!

You say this is her first summer with it. Unless she is a year old keep in mind that she has always had cf so if this is different than past years, something may be going on. I live in Rhode Island too. My boyfriend is in the hospital right now and they have had a LOT of cf patients in the last few weeks because of allergies. The pollen is really bad around here and the humidity does not help. Keep an eye on it and when in doubt, check with the doc ;-)

We are in Mass. and our allergies have been really bad this week. One of my sons has been coughing and has been hoarse too. I don't think its the humidity that causes it, but it can make it harder to breathe and keeps the allergins in the air longer. After last nights thunderstorms, maybe the air will be better. We take allegra for allergies. We also use ocean spray (nasal saline).

My allergies have been horrible this year and the humidity hasn't helped at all. I have been hoarse for three months and forgot what my normal voice sounds like. but my dr said it was normal and not to worry.

Also, TOBI makes you hoarse is she on that?

My niece just turned one in march so this will be her first summer knowing that it is the cf causing her to be sick.
My sister just actually called me and I could hear my niece in the background coughing...she sounded like crap....but she does have her appointment tomorrow at the clinic so if something is going on with her allergies or something they will know.
What will they do for her if it is allerigies just put her on allergy medicine....someone said their son was on allegra can she even be put on a allergy med at 15 months? Also what about the coughing do they cough when it is allergies? Sorry i am asking to many ?'s but this is still new to us and she has been doing good and I am getting worried. Thnks for all the responses it is really helping.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote> Also what about the coughing do they cough when it is allergies? </end quote></div>

I know for me any allergies I have cause me to cough if they cause my sinuses to act up. If you have drainage in your throat it can kick start the coughing, so yes it is totally possible that she can cough because of allergies.

Hopefully her doc can figure out the problem.

Good luck,
Lindsey

Keep in mind that coughing is not necessarily a BAD thing.  I
mean I know it's a pain in the butt and all, but for the most part
it's very necessary for a CFer.  It's our natural way of
keeping crap moving up and out of our lungs.  Obviously there
are different kinds of coughs..you may not be able to distinguish
them yet, but maybe you can I don't know,...eventually you will for
sure...anyway you'll know the difference between a
"infection" cough and a CF lung clearance cough.<br>

Also, allergies make me cough like crazy it's annoying but not
really anything to worry about.

I definitally don't know the difference between coughs yet...and you are right about coughing it is good in some ways...just hope it's not from an infection.
Like I said she sounds hoarse amd her cough sounded a little junky..like there was some crap in there she needed to get out but it seemed kinda like she was getting it up...like i could here it moving around ...I don't know if that makes any sense. Well she will going to the doctors tomorrow so we will find out for sure .Thanks for all the help

I am generally more "junky" in humid weather, or when it rains. At the moment I live somewhere with very low humidity, and when I visit my parents (where there is high humidity) I notice it almost immediately and my cough increases.

It sounds like you will be going to the clinic soon anyway, so as others have said, just keep an eye on it to see if it gets worse.

I find that the summer months dehydrate me, in turn causeing me to have a hoarse voice, coughing, etc. I drink plenty of water to try to keep this at bay.
