Sputum Culture question

I was told evening before and keep out at room temp. I wouldnt understand why they'd want the bacteria count down. As a Micro major I know they let samples sit in a overheated oven like thing for 3 days to make the bacteria grow faster and more so they can read it better. Who knows, it's a good question next time ya go in.

It was my understanding that they wanted to slow the growth just for the time between coughing it up and when they get a hold of it and start "growing" the sample.

I asked my cf nurse about whether to refrigerate or not my sputum after I collect the sample on the morning of my appointment. She said do not refrigerate as they always like to check for cepacia and the cold kills cepacia.
