Sputum cultures and kids

The Dr. ordered sputum cultures on my 3 kids ages 3,6 and 10. For the younger ones he said throat cultures or sputum we did the cultures b/c they didn't know how to give a sample. They want my 10 yr. old to give a sample but he doesn't know how either. He just seems to get stuff from his sinus. Sorry kind of gross!

Do others have this issue? If they end up doing a throat culture is it accurate? I don't want him to have a bronch(sp?) Also his chest xray showed alot of inflimation does that mean infection? Thanks.

I am 20 with CF and still have issues coughing up junk for the docs. I really don't know what I get when I cough up. I just get a ton of mucucs but it does not seem to be what I docs want. I would have the kids bronced. It's just better becuase then you know that there getting the right mucus for testing.

Are your children symptomatic? It's just my opinion, but I feel bronchs are better left for diagnostic purposes than defining a baseline. Bronchoscopies are great tools for obtaining deeper cultures or finding inflamation, but they are also very invasive and come with their share of risk. And, sadly, not even a bronchoscopy is 100% conclusive because there is just no way to reach every small airway in the lungs. So, talk with your doctor about what he/she is hoping to accomplish with the bronchs and go from there to decide if the bronchs will be that beneficial in your children't stage of disease.

Good luck!
