SSI and Medicaid Deductibles.

I work with a Medicaid program in NC and have been floored by the number of people that have a Medicaid deductible based on their SSI check. In NC you can make up to $820 a month from SSI (assuming no other income and this does not include VA benefits) before you have a Medicaid deductible. If you make $821 and above then you must pay a deductible before Medicaid is available. The state allows you $262 the rest is deductible. Meaning if your check is $821 then your deductible is $559. This must be paid before Medicaid is active each month.
(what stinks is if you make less than $821 you keep the whole check!)
My question is I was wandering if this affects everyone nationwide or state by state does the deductible amount change? And do all states even have a deductible?

Thanks

I believe it varies statewide. I know in NY there is an excess (spenddown is what we call it) to meet for SSI. I dont know what the current guidelines are because I have been out of that realm for 6 years, but I use to assist with Medicaid/SSI applications at our local hospital when I worked.

I am on SSI and Medicaid and am allowed to make around $820 I think, when I did work I made sure I didn't make more than that and haven't paid any deductibles.
