SSI & Taxes

I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to. Guess I could actually call the SS office and be put on hold for a lifetime but thought I'd ask ya'll first.

Anna gets SSI. Does she need to file taxes? Do any of ya'll that get SSI file taxes? She doesn't work at all, never has. I'm sure many of you can relate to that, it's the whole reason she gets it to begin with. OH, and she is our dependent. We still carry her.

I kinda think that she doesn't have to file but I"m just not really sure. Anyone that can help me with that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

She should have received a Form SSA-1099 - Social Security Benefit Statement. That will show how much was paid out to her for the year and there's a little worksheet on it to help you determine if part of her benefits were taxable. If she's never worked, I'm 99% sure she doesn't have pay any taxes, but I'm not as sure about filing. I know I never filed when I was on it and I know you can "earn" up to a certain amount of money and not have to file, I just don't know what that amount is. The only reason I can think of that she might want to file is to claim the EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit), but I think since she's technically your dependent she doesn't qualify (and she might have had to work too). Anyway, sorry to ramble. I think she should be fine, but always best to double check with the officials (who usually don't know what they're talking about either, hehe).

As for the 1099, just because she hasn't received it doesn't mean it wasn't mailed. IF there was an address change during the year, they won't forward those to the new address. Same with W-2s.

Aaahhh, good to know about that address change thing. We, she moved from TX to CA to NE during the whole transplant thing. Guess I should call the SS office.

Thanks!
