Staph, then PA, and now Staph Again

Kristen

I only cultured staph until I was about 23 years old. Then I cultured PA for the first time, and it was only PA. I continued to culture only PA for about 7 years. Then I started HS, and my cultures changed again - to both PA and Staph. And now I am culturing only Staph again. I haven't cultured PA in over a year, and I get cultured every 4 months.

Has anyone else had their cultures change like this? I just thought it was odd because the stuff I've read seems to say that CFers usually culture Staph first, then culture PA, and it's very hard to get rid of the PA.

FWIW, I've been on either Tobi or Colistin for about 5 years.

My younger one, Hannah, has cultured Staph and MRSA for about her entire life-although she is only 9 But she has had positive PA cultures, then gone an entire year of clear PA cultures, then positive again, and now clear again for almost a year and a half! Go figure...

She also did inhaled Tobi when she would have her positive PA cultures.

I get to where I am just never too surprised anymore when the results come back.

Yep-mine do! I started out with staph, and have cultured PA only twice in my life-once each time I was pregnant (7 years ago and 5 years ago)...and haven't cultured it since. I always thought it was wierd-because I thought once you culture PA you keep culturing it. I have the same genotyping as you, I wonder if that has anything to do with it??

I culture both on and off but I don't actually get rid of either. It really depends on the quality of the sputum sample, when I give a hopeless one it usually cultures just staph but a good chunky one shows both mucoid and non-mucoid PA as well. So for me, PA seems to "hide" a bit... but I know it's there
