Steriods, insulin???

So about a week ago my doc started some IV steriods to help with everything while Im here in the hospital. I have been having night sweats when I sleep and it freaked one of the drs out so they checked my blood sugar. (odd to me but glad they did). My sugars were 350, at 3am in the morning. Since then they are checking them 3-5 times a day. Every time my levels have been 250+ and I have required insulin shots each time.

They seem to be pretty sure its all due to the steriods and that my issue will clear up once I'm weaned off it. I took my last IV dose this morning and we will keep weaning from there.

Anyone else have experieneces like this? I have this awful feelings that I do have diabetes, but I seem to be the only one worried.

Any info would be great!

My blood sugars (and I'm sure everyone on here will agree) skyrocket on steroids. I've never had IV steroids - I'm just talking orals.

When I'm not on steroids, I don't have diabetes, but I do have impaired glucose tolerance... which means, I don't have traditional diabetes, but my blood sugar does go too high after big carb-filled meals or sweets. If you're worried about it, you might want to ask your dr. to prescribe you a meter, so that you can check your blood sugars two hours after meals once you go home and make sure you get back down into a normal range.

Your body is at much greater risk for infection when your blood sugar is over 200, so you have a vested interest to try to keep your sugars in an acceptable range. At first, I was eating next to no carbs, and I was ok. I gave up on that though, and now take supplemental insulin so that I can eat more of my favorite carby foods <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Good luck! I do hope your numbers go back to normal once you're off steroids. Even if they don't though, you may not have full blown diabetes.

Yes, steroids really mess with my sugars as well, I usually require quite a bit of coverage whenever I am on the stuff. It should get better once your dose goes down. I am diabetic, but with steroids, you get the picture...out of control. But once I am off steroids, my diabetes becomes very manageable.
I am glad that your doctors decided to check your sugars, I am sure you feel much better with the insulin coverage.

250 + isn't that bad, I have CFRD and when I am on steroids my numbers are well into the 400's and 500's. It gets really bad and I get tons on insulin. The doctors don't even know what to do with me half the time because it is out of control- I typically have to be put on an insulin drip because my body won't respond to insulin at all.

Don't worry so much about having CFRD, I am sure its just due to the steroids. Have the doctors check your hemoglobin a1c. A number under 7 means your not diabetic, anything over is. This is a good way to tell what the past 2-3 months have been for you and your blood sugar.
Also ask about getting a meter like kmaried said- this way you can double check at home.
