I know that a lot of you here dont have a problem when it comes to food and have big appetites. Im the opposite. I eat not because Im hungry but i know I have to.
Anyway i was wondering have any of you ever been put on anything like steroids specifically to give you an appetite. I have read of people who have.
Or do any of you have any hints to get an appetite. Im getting desperate!!!!<img src="i/expressions/rose.gif" border="0">

I have problems with my appetite, too. I don't know how to get my appetite better, but I wouldn't go on steroids. They can have too many side effects. One thing my nutritionist told me is to just eat things all day, instead of trying to eat three big meals. I have to say it is kinda working. It's really hard for me to eat in the mornings especially, but if I only have to eat a little bit, I can manage that, and then I just keep it up the rest of the day. Of course, i end up eating a lot of junk-food that way. it helps if there are leftovers in the fridge, then I can just heat up a little bit at a time. =-)

There is a med called megase i belive that specifically boosts your appitite....now I dont know if its a steriod, dont think it is....but i would ask your doc about something to boost your appitite...but yes if you happen to be on any steriod it will increase your appitite

Megase-that was the one I heard of! Ive heard though that yo can become dependent on it. But I dont know whats better that you eat because you're dependent on something or that you dont eat anything at all...

There are appetite stimulants that can be perscribed, but they tend to cause depression and many people have to be put on anti-depressiants as a result.

There are two different types of steroids: cortisone or prednisone type steroids and Anabolic Steroids. I know Cortisone types are horrible and should be used only in desperate or emergent situations. I had prednisone and it really made my life worse in the long run. As for the anabolic, I had a CF friend years ago who was prescribed anabolic and he benefited. Appetite, energy, strength, etc. Though his gains/benefits were short lived because he didn't work out/exercise routinely.

I asked my docs about putting me on steroids (anabolic) and they are extremely cautious about it. They say that our livers, which are already compromised due to the CF, could sustain irreversible damage, though this would depend on the degree to which you are already dealing with existing liver issues.

But, if you are talking about the cortisone/prednisone stuff, stay away from it at all costs.

Hi shamrock,
I actually only posted a topic a little bit down saying effect of steriods on the brain(but only one replied)it was to do with appetite. You should have a chat with bren, he also does night feeds and has no appetite except when he on iv's and has to take steroids.(delta cortisone)He was also on megase which really boosted his appetite but apparently your only allowed on it a couple of months at a time, but from what i saw it really worked.

Hi, My daughter, now 17yrs 11mo., was on Megase. When we were living in Dayton, OH. the docs at the childrens hosp. gave it a try for her. It has not been tested for younger children though. She was 14 at the time. Anyhow, she was having trouble gaining and a "button" was out the question for her. She refused to even talk about it. She just said "NO" and shut down. Anyhow... This is what they said... Use it for a boost, they didn't want to use it long term. It's a med originally used for cancer and AIDS patients to help them gain weight. It worked wonders. You have to take it in liquid form as it would be too many pills to take for the amount needed. She only took like a small dosage cup, I think, can't recall for sure. It slowly allowed her to eat more, because of the increased appetite. She wasn't immediatly starving. It took a couple of days to "kick" in. Slowly her stomach stretched and she was able to maintan.

Gotta get. Will add more if interested.
