Our peanut still has a little cough. Its better, but now i want to clean up the house. I have read some posts about pulling up carpet and removing certain fragrances. I can't remove the carpet in our house because we rent. We do not have carpet in our bedrooms. What has helped your family? We are going to buy new funiture. We have a Ion in her room.

be careful of the ion air purifiers. HEPA air purifiers are must more powerful and ionic chargers may actually hurt the lungs.

also, if you can't remove the carpet, you can treat the carpet with a dust mite product such as this:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.allergyasthmatech.com/P/Allersearch_XMite_AntiAllergen_Carpet_Cleaner/152_368
">http://www.allergyasthmatech.c...arpet_Cleaner/152_368
</a>

but remember that CFer's cough - so you most likely won't be able to get rid of it completely.

I rent and I have wall to wall carpeting. I can't do anything about that. I got rid of curtains, upholstered furniture, particle board and MDF furniture, toxic cleaners. We peroxide the vacuum cleaner when it is emptied so we aren't just spreading germs with it.

HTH.

Hi Tcole,

I have read all that Grayson has gone through and you are smart to make changes to help her after such a rough time. It is even quite possible that her cough will improve. I used to have a chronic cough (people used to say to me, "I heard you coming. I know your cough) and unless I come across triggers I really don't have that chronic cough any more.

I agree with Michele's advice concerning furniture and cleaners. Leather is best, next tightly woven fabrics.

Ionizers cause asthma. In Californa, they stopped the Sharper Image from selling them because they gave off such high ozone. See if you can buy a HEPA/charcoal air filter.

When you can't pick up the carpets, the next best thing is getting it clean as you can - all kinds of things are imbedded in carpet that cause "allergic responses". Steam cleaning or rather vapor cleaning that is also called "dry steam" cleaning is best.

Scientists from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), the University of Washington, Harvard University and Rho Inc. completed the study, whose findings were summarized by Darryl C. Zeldin, M.D., and published in the NIEHS journal, Environmental Health Perspectives:

"Decreases in dust-mite allergens following a single vacuuming did not last as long as decreases following dry steam cleaning and vacuuming," Zeldin said. "We believe the hot, dry steam kills the mites and vacuuming removes them from the carpet."

</a>
The next website, although a commercial site, it explains the process well. Ignore the part about adding any chemicals.

Next best is regular steaming. If you have no choice other than shampooing, use water only, no detergents or fragrances. The downside is that you have to make sure that the carpet dries completely or there is a risk of mold.

And if anyone reading this has CF and you have to do this, I'd wear a good mask - who knows what any of this stirs up.

There is much you can do and you can check out many good threads on this website for more ideas. I hope Grayson starts to have a smoother ride.
