Ok I'll try and make this brief and fill you guys in, and I need some suggestions:

Ok I not too long ago had some bad bleeds. They were usually pretty extreme, would happen after treatments, upon laying flat in bed, and other non exertive actions. They also occurred during moments of exertion, and by exertion I don't mean lifting weights or anything similar, i'm talking actions that mean a quick pulse or blood pressure increase. Something like getting on a bike and hauling ass for a bit or something. At work i'd be fine, but if something important happened and I'd get on the bike and "opened it up", or say went from walking/standing still to sprinting, or some energetic sex, I'd basically always get a bleed. And not something small like streaks etc, serious bleeds.

After tolerating it for a while, it got worse, and any hope of trying to fix it or reduce it with supplements, and normal care was lost. I went and got a strong course of IV and oral antibiotics, and although I still had a couple smaller bleeds while on those, but in general, their frequency and severity reduced quite a bit. I made it a point to avoid explosive type exertion (sprinting, strong sex, biking quick, etc), and generally quickly spiking my blood pressure and pulse, and my bleeds kind of stopped.

I also had a CT scan of my chest (after fighting to get it done), and cultures to see if I had MAC bacterium. Everything came back negative, with the exception of some bronchiactasis in both left and right upper lobe. Basically, they had no idea what besides an infection would be causing my bleeds. My PFT's were very strong at last check up (in the high 90's). I do HTS, pulmo, collistin, and albuterol twice a day with a strong vest treatment. I have been coughing up decent amounts of fluid at night and in the morning (average amount = 5 or so tablespoons), of mostly very light sputum with only a few splots of darker green (one looks non mucoid and the other less frequent shower looks mucoid).

I stopped taking all my weird or seemingly excessive supplements. Now all I take is a good multivitamin, about 625% rda of vitamin K, and 2 grams of l-lysine a day, and I switched to a vegetarian diet. I generally feel really good, lift weights, walk a ton, etc. About the only thing I can say is "wrong" with me besides the bleeds, involving CF crap, is i'm constantly battling my sinuses with rinses, sprays, etc because my nose runs like mad when I do my vest, when I wake up, etc. Also, for a bit now, i've noticed i've had some slight fluid in my lungs between treatments. I've had CTs of my sinuses, and my ENT wanted to do surgery "next time I get sick". She said she saw no pollyps, but "My sinuses were pretty bad".

I hadn't had a real bleed in nearly two months, just some light streaks, and one minor bleed during vest. I thought the problem was behind me...

Tonight something serious took place at work, on the other part of the building from where we were. I had to respond quick. I got on our bike and hauled ass over to the location. I didn't feel the known gurgly feeling of a regular bleed really. I got off the bike and coughed, and coughed up the pure blood. It wasn't one of those still bleeding bleeds, where it filled up after you coughed some up. I got the impression it was just something that got irritated by something, and decided to bleed. Not my old projectile "Oh crap this might be the big one, im gonna die" type bleeds.

Needless to say, it pissed me off. I thought I had put it behind me, but lo and behold, quick exertion still = a bleed. This pisses me off so bad because I know i'm in great shape in many ways, except for this monkey wrench. I know things could be worse, but there has to be a solution to this problem. I don't want to end up on an endless rotation of antibiotics and go down that slowly eroding path. I've been able to keep my two bugs relatively weak against antibiotics due to not relying on them heavily, and would like to keep it that way.

Would bumping up my already high lvl of vitamin K help more? I'm already at 625% RDA. I'm already on 2 grams of l-lysine. So far the doc has said he can't see any reason for my bleeds. I do all my meds and vest treatments religiously. I tried going off pulmo for a week, and that was horrible.

So what path do you guys think I should try next? Could the bleeding from quick exertion be something like my body isn't used to burst exertion due to me not really doing much cardio besides a ton of brisk walking? Would it maybe help to slowly incorporate something that raises my pulse and Blood pressure like jogging? Maybe I have a static level of fluid in my lung airsacs, and when I do burst exertion, it stresses it and whamo...Bleed. Who knows. Surely i'm at a loss now.

I highly respect you guys, and you are all a wealth of information. Do you guys have any suggestions on the next course of action/exploration? I'd really appreciate any at this point.

Thanks.

Have you been tested or treated for aspergillus in your lungs? This seems to be the thing that caused most of my bleeds. 12 years of bleeding then last year it got very bad and I had to have coils ie. embolization. Try a probiotic, see if that helps, it might help reduce any fungus you might have. The other thing I have found is consistency with therapy and exercise as well as drinking plenty of water. It really is a game sometimes, but consider the aspergillus question, and no you don't have to be allergic to it for it to affect you. Hope you find some answers, bleeding sucks the most.!!

OK.

I have one suggestion. Have you tried peeing on the pH strips to see how acidic your body is? pHion is the brand I use.

Anyway, I started having a few bleeds a while back always around my period and I started wondering if it was the hormones making me bleed, whether I had endometrial lining in my lungs, or possibly was it associated with acidity due to hormonal changes. I have been doing a ton of research on acidity and cf (we are VERY acidic due to the fact the chloride chanel is broken and sodium bicarb can't get out of the cell) Seeing as that is the main way we stay pH balanced, I began to look into ways of helping me body be less acidic.

The few times I had the bleeds, I immediately peed on a strip and lo and behold, I was at the most acidic I could be. The makes a lot of sense because acidity degrades the lining of capillaries, veins arteries etc. so i figured I needed to focus on maintaining a less acidic body.

How to do that? It is associated with individual body chemistry (cf), diet and DIET. Also, pH depends on exercise (too much and your get VERY acidic), medicines (almost all cf meds are acidic (especially inhaled ones). You may be saying, not true they are buffered and pH balanced. THAT IS FALSE. Just because it is pH balanced, does not mean that is what it is once your body metabolizes it.

So, if you are really wanting to give this a try...buy a juicer. Juice greens...they are your best friend when trying to get your pH healthy. I spent a lot of money on a ridiculous green star machine, but honestly, a jack lalane is fine. people will say the enzymes are too broken down by this one, but some is better than none and it is affordable.

I know you are trying the vegetarian deal now...that's great. But, you need to read a book on what is more and less acidic in terms of veggies...... Because you need the calories, just add more green veggie juice and try not to subtract.

When your body is acidic, your body steals minerals from yur bones and tissue to try and make the body more alkaline. In doing so, you will eventually run into issues with depleted minerals because your poor body can't keep up with the demand. So, you are maintaining your acidity and have no back up and the acid is breaking down the elasticity and intergrity of your tissues....hence the bleeds. Think about it....imagine your lungs in battery acid. They will erode and become hard...now imagine your lungs in a bath of pH balanced liquid....while for a cfer they will never be perfect, they will at least be in the most supportive environment.

You can research Acid/Alkaline foods and veggies on line and there are so many books on the subject as well. Oprah had a lady on one day and while they did not say it, she follows a food system (developed by Dr. Richard young) that helps her body stay alkaline.

I also drink highly alkaline water now....my body pH is sooo much better...although I still have some acid days... But as far as the bleeds go, it has helped me. Mine have never been like yours, but they are better than they were.

Oh, and oregano oil is extremely alkaline...interesting. Didn't you say they were a little better when you were on this? Try the green deal, I will hope it works for you. SD, I am not saying this is the only reason you are having bleeds...I am just suggesting a new way to alleviate them (hopefully)

PS Probiotics can help intestinal acidity as well.
