Still sick?

Hi, everyone.

So, I'm going on my third week of meds and overall my cough has improved, appetite is coming back, energy would be back if I'd get my behind off the couch (ha!), etc. However, I notice I still cough up the icky green crap when I do huff coughs or laugh.

Usually, for me, I get to the point where I don't cough anything up when I truly am "well", however I think as we get older (and sicker), sometimes just feeling better overall (even if you're still coughing up stuff) is ok? I did 6 weeks of IV meds last time and got FEV1 up a little above what it is now. My docs seem to think that since my FEV1 went up 6% in two weeks, three weeks is plenty for I.V.s this go-around.

I guess I'm just curious if you ever go off IV abx if you're just feeling better and FEV1 is back to baseline but you're still coughing gunk up occasionally? Since I'm usually NOT coughing up stuff when I go off, it worries me to go off them too quickly. Although I've also heard the CFF recommends (in general) 3-4 weeks abx as a full course and it shouldn't go longer unless absolutely necessary and unless you're not back to baseline (which I am).

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone! Sorry for all the questions... I seem to have a lot of them whenever I'm on IV meds, don't I?!?

Sometimes its so hard to tell when to discontinue. My doctor usually errs on the side of caution going by pfts, sputum, overall how I am feeling as well as some other things.

There have been times that we extended it as precaution and other times we stopped it earlier then I expected to.

If you are still coughing up green junk....I, personally, would give it more time. It might just be getting that that really tough stuff & I would hate to see you backtrack.

I will also say that as a rule....the older I got the longer I needed. I am not sure if this normally goes hand in hand!

Good Luck!

The last few times I was in I was still coughing up stuff and ended up back in again. So having a 4 week treatment might not be a bad idea.

That being said, as I've gotten older I do cough up more stuff than I have before, though much of it is concentrated during my early AM treatments, and not throughout the day.

Ah....I remember back when 10 days of antibiotics used to do the trick!

I usually have to be on antibiotics for around 3 weeks. My appetite and energy level always return to normal within the first week but my cough tends to linger a bit longer than it used to. Even when I complete the course my sputum may still be a little bit blood streaked. However, I always feel much better and am coughing a lot less and moving air much better than when I started. The infection seems to hold off for quite a while also.

I have cut my antibiotics off short in the past. I regretted it when I ended up sick and with a collapsed lung! I would definitely give it one more chance before stopping

I hope everything works out for you!
