Stomach problems

I had pretty severe stomach pain from as far back as I can remember till about age 20. I finally was on my own at grad school and figured out that if I didnt eat fat (only lean chicken, fish, turkey), cut way back on the starchy carbos and went heavy of the fruit and veggies, the pain was pretty much gone. I dont do dairy except yogurt. Whenever I cheat, the pain is back. It seems like my system got a whole lot more efficient and absorbed more when I cut out the high calorie food and I had no problem maintaining weight (actually, I gained too much!) But every person is different, everyone's CF seems very individualized. Try eliminating certain stuff, adding others, see what works for you. No matter what I eat, I still have very bad reflux, but it is paralyzingly bad if I eat anything fatty. No liver of kidney problems here. I am a big fan of experimenting safely and knowledgeably. If you are too thin or too heavy, it will negatively affect your immune system/lungs. The small and frequent meal suggestion is excellent.

I had terrible stomach pains and nausea for a couple years. It was always worse soon after I ate and at night when I would lie down to sleep. The fattier the foods, the worse the pain. I eventually looked into it and they did a couple of tests. Turns out, my gallbladder just wasn't working anymore (no stones, just blocked- a typical CF thing). I got it removed 7 months ago and so far, no more stomach problems! I only have a hard time if I eat big meals or fatty things.
Maybe ask your doctor to check out your gallbladder?!

I had the same problem with my stomach and over a period of 2 months it worsened to the point where I had to lay on the floor until the pain subsided. I went to the ER and was diagnosed with Colitis and it was suggested I have a colonoscopy. I ended up going to the ER again a few months later and was admitted and had my gallbladder removed. It's been just over 3 years and I have not had any complications. I didn't even know that CF directly affected the functioning of my gallbladder but it all made sense after it was all said and done.

It sounds like a lack of enzymes. Discuss this with your CF Doctor, not your Primary Care Doctor.</end quote></div>

Pain with that much delay could also be gastroparesis, a delay in gastric emptying. Ask your CF doctor about it and maybe ask for a GI consult as well. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Good luck!
