Ok, I feel really dumb asking this because I'm sure I should already know the answer, but....
Why can't they just suction all of the mucus and crap out of your lungs? Or do they do something like that, and if so, what is it called?

Its called a bronchial lavage. From what i know about it, which is very little, it would only be temporary since the lungs will keep producing more mucus.

I always get asked this question too and I also just assumed it was because putting something foreign in your lungs to suction all that gunk out all the time can't be good. But I've never asked my Dr so that is solely MY opinion! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> And like Diane said, we would still keep producing that gunk so it would only help for a little while.

Like the others said, it would be invasive and temporary. Maggie had a bronchoscopy 2 1/2 years ago; they did cultures and used saline to wash out any mucous. After the bronch, she coughed MORE from all the irritation to her airways(lasted only a day or two after the procedure) I think of Hypertonic Saline as a way to get the mucous and crap out. The concentrated salt liquifies the dehydrated mucous in the lungs so it can be coughed out.
