Hello all, I have CF and CFRD and i am eating too much fast sugars, but my glucose levels are under control. It was ok until i heard that eating more than 100 g of fast sugar a day can weaken our immunity. Is this true, is eating too much sweets not good for a CF er.

I'VE EATEN LOTS AND LOTS OF SUGAR MY WHOLE LIFE.2YRS AGO I GOT DIABETES.I STILL EAT 1-3 BOXES OF JELLO PUDDING PER DAY,JUST TAKE MORE INSULIN.BUT IT DID NOT WEAKEN ME.IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR BODY.YOU REALLY SHOULD EAT NATURAL SUGARS,LIKE FRUIT AND STUFF.HAVING TO TAKE INSULIN SHOTS REALLY SUCKS.I'M AT A BOUT 3 PER DAY.I'M 36 NOW.

Sugars are not going to weaken your immune system. When your glucose leves (blood suger) are out of control, you don't absorb nutrients on the molecular level. Over a period of time, this leads to malnutrition and that causes immune problems. Sugar is ok, but don't go overbord. Limit sweets, sodas which have empty calories. If you have a sweet tooth, eat ice cream, granola, drink chocolate milk...these all have good calories and fat. Fructose, the sugar in fruit, is wonderful and healthy.Debbie 22 yr old w/ CF, CFRD

It is quite true, that sugar DOES indeed weaken one's immune system. The ingestion of common table sugar directly impacts the leukocytes, cells responsible for ingestion of foreign organisms, lowering their ability to ingest foreign proteins. This effect of sugar last for about 2-5 hours, dose dependant.

I dont know if sugar weakens the immune system or not, but i have a heck of a sweet tooth and always did. I got diabetes when i was 15 and my lungs were perfectly healthy at the time. I take only one shot of long acting insulin a day ad know when it will peak and eat my treats then. I also check my blood sugar LOT during the day ( about 6 - 8 times) and only eat my sugar snackswhen i can. Ths seems to work well for me, and my immune system has been well over the years, so i would wonder about the sugar weakening the immune system thing. Now i do agree that too much of a good thing may be bad, so it is wise to eat other foods as well. By the way the b.cepacia i have came from being in the hospital <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0"> , not eating sugar ~ Diane 39 / diabetes / b.cepacia
