Hey,

So here's my quick story.
Went to the doctors 2 weeks ago for regular checkup. My PFT's were down a bit, roughly a 10% drop (not too significant they said.)But they thought I had a cold or something (I have been sick throughout the winter) so they prescribed me septra (sp?) and cipro orally. So I started to take them. A few days in I noticed some blood in my sputum (I've had it before, just took note). It continued for a couple days so I decided to call my doctor. Went in to emerg, got an x-ray, listened to me, etc. Lungs were fine (fine as in the same, doctor said even maybe a bit clearer). But they prescribed me pred, once a day, 50mg's or something like that (not sure on the exact dosage). So I started it Friday and the so the streaks were becoming less, except in the mornings where I'd cough up the nights crap and there would be old brownish looking blood. So I had a followup meeting with my doc (yesterday) because he couldn't see me the day I went to emergency and he told me everything was fine, but if the bleeding continues go on with pred for a longer time. My PFT's were also a up a bit since my checkup. FVC was normal range for me, and FEV1 was just down a bit.

SOOOOO..... all is well until this morning. I wake up and I know immediately. Blood. I can feel the gurgle in my lung lol. So I go to the sink and spit it out. (now that's what I hate waking up to) So spat some out downstairs, went to the upstairs sink, left some there... So I page my doc to let him know and now I'm waiting on a response. And now the blood in decreasing/ it's pretty much gone away.

So... should I go back to emerg? Or wait it out. I've had bleeds before, but right now I'm not too sure on what should I do.

List of meds
Tobra
Ventolin
Saline Solution (not HS)
Pulmozyme (off for a bit, because I was checking to see if that's why I was bleeding)

ADEKS
Vit D
Phosomax (bone stuff)
Losec (acid reflux)
Cotazym ECS 20

That's all I can think off the top of my head

I've never coughed up blood before so I can't help you there but I don't know about going back to the ER. They can carry some nasty bugs that you can pick up. If you don't hear back from your DR soon though it might be the best thing. That's all I can think of sorry!!!

I was told when I hacked up some blood to just keep an eye on it. If it decreased they said not to worry about it. Blood streaked sputum is very common especially in the morning. Since its decreasing I would wait to see what your doc says. Good luck!

pulmozyme has been known to cause bleeding....perhaps you could try upping the antibiotics and taking a break from pulmozyme and give your lungs a chance to heal up. it's probably a minor infection that your lungs need to kick.

good luck! feel better.
